Las Vegas casino pioneer Jackie Gaughan, passed away Wednesday at age 93.
Mr. Gaughan lived out his final years in an apartment high atop the El Cortez Hotel and Casino – even after selling the property to new owners – and was such an icon on the Las Vegas Strip that the new owners allowed him to remain in the apartment with 24-hour care.

With Mr. Gaughan's passing, who now takes the mantle of, "Las Vegas Icon"?
Steve Wynn comes to my mind, but are there any other candidates?

I played poker with him. I wouldn't call his play legendary. He was a card chaser from hell. He played poker in his own game. One of the jokes at the table was "Where's Jackie? I need my ashtray dumped." To me Jackie was the classs of downtown. He didn't use the heavy handed tactics that Benny did. I ran into him at the cage once.
"What are you gonna do Jackie? Out live us all?"
"Well, I don't know" he said
When I was on the streets and playing bum bingo at the Western Jackie would come in and pass out meal comps to all the down and outers. He was pure class.
They say that his wife's funeral was the largest anyone had ever seen in Omaha, Nebraska. Jackie got his start making book in the bars across from the slaughterhouses in Omaha. I think the folks of Omaha are going to see a funeral even bigger than Jackie's wife's was.
RIP Jackie. I will miss you forever.

Another downtown joke:
"Has anybody seen Jerkie Gaughan?"
"He's up at Bunyon's Horseshoe." was the reply

In my mind...nobody, because he was one of a kind and the people that lived their lives and operated a casino like he did are now all gone. It is a sad day, yet 99% of the people who visit Vegas today never heard of him.
