Quote: WizardFor any stragglers still in Vegas, and us locals, I'm open for a late lunch or early dinner on Thursday. Perhaps at the new Cromwell (the new place on the Barbary Coast location on the north-east corner of Flamingo and the LV Blvd.). Any interest?
Sounds fun.

Quote: Konbu... and made an entry in the journal at the summit in honor of Mr. Shackleford. I look forward to the next WoVcon.
My suggestion is that you energetic folks climb back up there and edit your entry -- let's give Dr. Shackleford credit for his academic accomplishments in Physics that led to that career in rocket science!
(No, I'm not one of the energetic ones -- I just come up with ideas and suggestions for others to labor on.)
The first photo shows SOOPOO, Beachbumbabs, and DRich. Don't they look like a happy trio? Obviously, they had somewhere else they wanted to get to.
(edit: couldn't stand having such a horrid surprise candid up there of me, doc; I killed it. Please forgive me. BBB)
Edit 9/22/14: To summarize some of the discussion that is on the following pages, I posted a somewhat-offensive photo here on 4/30/14. It was deleted by a mod, and I raised an objection that was taken far more seriously than I intended. It led to far too much controversy. I subsequently edited the photo in a manner suggested (below) by another member and posted it here. That picture just looked stupid and was likely at least as offensive as the original. I have recently learned that it is still causing problems, so I have deleted it from my post. Hopefully, this can all be forgiven and forgotten.
The second photo shows the incognito AcesAndEights, Konbu, rdw4potus, Nareed, and MrV. They look at least a little bit more delighted, I suppose. My wife and I were the final two people who had joined in the festivities -- we aren't in the photos at all and were the two who were genuinely smiling.
Following this photo session, there was an attempt to play in the MSS casino, and a few people were able to find seats at a card table. As Babs reported earlier, there was not enough room for us at the 20x Odds craps table, so we hiked our butts across the street to a 2x Odds table at the California and had an amazingly profitable session. (Unfortunately, on Sunday evening I had sessions with some of these same folks at Rio and Gold Coast that were so abysmal that I lost more than I won at the California. Came out ahead for the trip, though.)
Earlier in the week, Nareed celebrated her birthday with a little party at Le Burger Brasserie, in the connecting mall between Paris and Bally's. We discussed that this might be a very good venue for a future WoV gathering. For the birthday party, there were only four of us present, and our waitress was kind enough to take the photo. This shows Paigowdan, Nareed, myself, and my wife.

That is very cool & also very nice of you guys.

Now wait just a sec.... That was not a candid photo. Everyone stood and posed for those shots, and I already apologized for the poor quality. Is this really a proper role for a moderator, to censor posts that he/she doesn't want others to see. That just smacks of vanity!

Moderator or not, you should not be posting members' pictures to the forum without their permission. Even if they give their permission, it seems reasonable for them to be able to rescind it (although admittedly that part is debatable)

Can you drop an image of the female Minion from Despicable Me over BBB and repost?
I do not have plans to re-post images that a moderator might decide to delete. Why bother posting here at all, if someone else is going to decide what your post says?
Quote: DocEveryone in the photos gave permission and knew that the plan was to post them in the forum. That is exactly why AcesAndEights posed incognito.

I don't blame you. Looks like an abuse of power to me. Suspension?

While I agree that a moderator (ab)using her power in this way doesn't quite seem right, I'd hope that if anyone in such a situation sent you a message saying, "hey, I changed my mind; I'm really not comfortable having my picture up there, would you remove it or edit it so I'm blurred out", that you'd comply. If this is, in fact, the case, she may have just seen this as a short cut to the same result and not meant it in a heavy-handed way.
In case you (or someone else) would not be willing to comply, I wonder how the moderators would rule. Eg, suppose someone took a picture of me, which I agreed to have posted on this site. The next day, I say, what the hell, that was stupid -- I don't want my picture here! I ask the photographer to remove the photo, and they refuse. I send messages to the moderators saying that, even though I gave my permission originally, I have now changed my mind and am not comfortable having my image here; can it please be removed.... would they remove it?

Doc, I agree with you completely and thank you for sharing the photos!
On the other hand, if someone (admin or not) wants to have his or her picture removed from public view, I can understand.

I second that. Doc is a gentleman and would not have posted any pictures for which he had no permission. and it was definitely not a candid shot.
If someone doesn't want her picture out, she could ask, nicely, that it be removed. I removed a picture once when asked to do so (no, I'm not saying whose or when).

If you gave your permission for it to be posted in the first place, barring any reasons that could be a financial, legal or physical threat to your well-being, I would be inclined to say that, "If you want it removed, go talk to the person to whom you gave permission to post it in the first place." However, if there were extenuating circumstances in place, then I might make the call to delete it myself, or if the poster in question of the picture hadn't been here in a long time and could be presumed unable to acquiesce your request, even if he wanted to.

Hold on, I'm confused. You're saying you had permission to put these photos up, but BBB is calling it a 'Candid,' photo, so maybe there's a bit of confusion going on. Perhaps BBB thought she was giving permission for a particular photo rather than all photos and you thought you were getting permission for all photos. I don't know, I wasn't there.
Is there any way just to blur BBB out of that photo and repost? It won't be touched if you do that.
Doc clearly asked if we wanted our photos taken, and I knew it was likely it would be posted on the board.
Hey, we are what we are, we look like what we look like.
I just wish the pic weren't so blurry; you can't make out my tumbling dice too clearly on my Wal-Mart sourced flying dice shirt.

You are absolutely correct -- the photography is abysmal. I rushed it, didn't take time to get good shots, and didn't re-shoot. I wouldn't have posted these photos, but they were the only ones I had to offer, and I have posted group photos from each of the previous three years' gatherings. I thought folks would be expecting me to post some pix, and I just didn't have anything else to offer.

O.K., so maybe I over-reacted. I should note that Beachbumbabs and I got along just fine the entire week of the Spring Fling. On Wednesday, we played craps at the Cosmopolitan (a $200+ winning session for each of us). Next, I took her and my wife handbag shopping at the outlet mall, then we had a nice dinner together at The Henry at the Cosmopolitan, followed by another craps session. We again had fun together on Saturday at lunch and the very favorable craps session at the California. I certainly don't want some minor tift about a photo to damage a friendship developed in this forum.
In an attempt to be specific, yes, I very clearly got permission to take the posed photos. I certainly thought everyone understood clearly that I was just taking them to post in this forum. As far as there being confusion between "a particular photo" vs. "all photos", this shot in question is the only photo I took of Babs the entire week.
I do indeed understand why she was disappointed to see that photo posted. She definitely does not look her best in the photo. For that matter, SOOPOO might not like the way he looks in it either -- both of them seem to be frowning and having a miserable time. That's why I made the comments about how "happy" they looked. I would have chosen a different picture to post, but I didn't have an alternate available.
Yes, I could edit the photo in some way to eliminate her image. Fellow attendee rdw4potus suggested earlier in this thread that I should replace her with a minion from Despicable Me. (I had to look that up -- I'm so out of touch that I didn't know what he meant.) I actually did create such a photo, but I have not posted it because that might be taken as even more offensive than the original photo. Besides, if I did post it, then SOOPOO and DRich might be all over this thread complaining about how they look in the photo and demanding that it be removed.
In spite of the solemn expressions in the photo, I didn't really think people looked all that bad. Has anyone looked back at last year's photos to see how ridiculous some of us looked? Anyway, I don't think I would have posted the photo if I thought it would really offend anyone, and I was a bit shocked to see it deleted administratively rather than even a simple request that I modify it or take it down if it really was viewed as something that should not be exhibited publicly. As I said above, I probably over reacted.
Quote: MrVI just wish the pic weren't so blurry; you can't make out my tumbling dice too clearly on my Wal-Mart sourced flying dice shirt.
Oh, THAT's what those are. I need to get one of those.
Now all I have to look forward to is when does EB post again, if never.
Quote: DocAren't you the guy who once posted something about remembering me as looking really, really old?
Well, that would be stupid of me to say I can't recall a post that you have linked, now wouldn't it? lol
But I'm not sure about the looking really, really old part. A ref should give you a 2 minute penalty for embellishment.

I think Doc looks younger every time I see him. I assume that's a side effect of retirement.

I don't think it would be out of line to put a Despicable Me minion in the photo as it is just replacing her position in the photo rather than representing her in the photo.
I also appreciate the explanation of all of the controversy surrounding the photo in question, and would be quite surprised if SOOPOO or DRich felt removal of the photo to be necessary.
I should also apologize, on behalf of WoV as a whole, anyway, for the fact that the photo was removed Administratively rather than a direct request being made for you to remove the photo, or to otherwise Edit the photo. Generally speaking, the only time that we should take liberties with Editing the posts of Members is when we are Editing out something that is openly offensive, when we are Editing out something that is bannable (but choosing to give a PM Warning instead, for varying reasons) or when we are Editing out Spam. In this case, your photo fit none of those criteria, should not have been removed without your knowledge or consent, so I again apologize for that.

I fully agree. BBB did something here, in regards to a photo of herself, that none of us civilians would be able to do should a photo of us be posted that we don't like. And her position on this site does not (as you clearly stated) give her the power or authority to do what she did in this case. She abused power, and took advantage of the tools she has as an Admin to change something SOMEONE ELSE posted... Simply because she didn't like it. Hmmmm
A similarly abusive move by anyone else would've resulted in an immediate suspension. And many non admins have been suspended for way lessor actions than this one here

First of all..... Babs! Put that photo back! If I was frowning it was in jest! I couldn't have enjoyed the meet up more! And Doc had just told us he was Ansel Adams in disguise....
The lunch.... The venue I thought was perfect.... inexpensive for those who would care... not too crowded...
I got to meet a bunch of people you only 'see' via their typed words...
I didn't get to talk much to Drich and Mr V, but you get the measure of a man when a large group has to split a check, with everyone trying to figure out what they should put in. They both put in more than their fair share, resulting in a windfall for the waitress!
Aces&Eights I had met at a previous vegas visit, and he is the same 'good guy' he was back then. Let's all wish him well on his impending marriage! We played Pai Gow Poker... I almost didn't win a hand.....
Konbu is just the most soft spoken, nicest guy ever! I tried to imagine if anything could have happened to get that infectious smile off of his face!
I've met Ahigh and little Ahigh before, and the only downer was that big Ahigh couldn't join us for craps. After speaking with Aaron, I am still bullish on my NTEK! If my son was interested in Vegas, Aaron had a job for him!
When you read a forum, you always make a mental picture of what the people look like. I did not actually need to meet Doc and Mrs. Doc! They were exactly as I pictured! I can see Doc as being the most dependable friend you can ever have! And I can sense that Doc and Mrs. Doc's next argument will be their first!
With the mental picture thing, the opposite can be said of RDW4potus! I expected an older, and definitely smaller, guy! RDW is a great listener, as he was willing to meet up with me a few more times during the trip! To gamble with me and not go crazy you got to be willing to tolerate my endless banter! I think I have another member hooked on Asia poker at the Gold Coast. By the way, BBB found out it is still at Paris, too.
Although technically not a forum member, my ex also had a great time at the lunch, and was impressed by the collection of characters! She had to bail on the Sunday hike, as we have friends who live in Vegas that only had Sunday morning free to meet up. She actually ended up doing a different hike on Sunday with the local friend, and she did a guided 'protection' type climb on Monday.
I'll get to BBB in a separate post!
Quote: IbeatyouracesAll I've got to say is, if you don't want your picture posted for all to see, don't even get into it. Even the casinos now can see who A&8's is now just by his attire.
Oh, come on. he's the young white guy in the tee shirt and shorts. Oh, wait. Did I just describe 75% of the tourists in Vegas? :-)
Axelwolf is perhaps my favorite forum member! I think if you were casting a screenplay about a Vegas gambler he would be the pick! The hat, the dark glasses, the sport coat..... Anyway, I love the fact that there is a guy truly making a living at AP, and to respect his privacy, I can't give any details, other than to say he lived up to his end of the bargain. I will look forward to seeing him every trip I make to Vegas!
DJATC was also there, and he is just such a nice guy! He kind of reminds me of my sons, someone just starting out in the world..... I am sure he will be as successful as Axel...
