Yup you are learning! Stay away from the sucker side bets and your money will last a lot longer.
Speaking of which... the $1 commission is really bad. Are there any Indian casinos close to you? They don't have to charge the commission there. I live in CA as well (up north) and I drive an hour and a half to get to an Indian casino instead of playing at a California cardroom nearby.
