So just got news that Sual Zaentz died who was I guess the Miramax of his era. Some great movies came from his production company. Also sued the pants off of everyone it is said. I remember him mainly as the guy who's name you would always see on the Lord of the Rings cartoons, movies, and games.

This was from his early life courtesy of imdb:

Saul Zaentz learned gambling as a youth in Passaic, New Jersey, playing a card game called briscola. Later, in his twenties, he earned a full-time living as a gambler.

One of his best known quotes- "Studios are like flies - they'll both eat honey or shit with equal enthusiasm."

Any stories or thoughts?

I had to google around to find out who this guy was. I was shocked. This is the guy that screwed John Fogerty over bigtime. Read the wiki on him. I'm a big John Fogerty fan so I don't care much for this Zaentz guy. For like 30 years Fogerty didn't collect a single penny in royalties from all of his hit records.

Believe or not, Kenneth Napp and me auditioned for Fantasy Records in 1971. The guy listened to us for about five minutes then gave us a good talking to. It was a thanks but no thanks situation.

I googled a little, and found out that everybody in show business is an asshole.

Wikipedia doesn't mention the gambling, and none of the films are favorites of mine, but Mickey, you should do a CCR thread because their music is incredibly popular on casino playlists. Or maybe it's my perceptive bias, but it seems like I'm routinely scrambling for the volume on my MP3 player to drown them out.

What's the difference between an old school ap and a new school ap? This guy is so unknown that even mickey has never heard of him. My guess is if he were around today he'd be methodically taken apart in the poker rooms.

My take: Classic CCR is great music. It takes us old fogeys right back to the excitement of the 60's-70's like few other groups do. (Note; the sound depends almost entirely on Fogerty's vocals.) Since the perception is we are the generation most willing to go throw money at casinos, they tend to put CCR on the playlist.

I think CCR holds the record for most number 2 songs without a number 1. Something like a dozen.
