I think about moving and am repulsed at the idea of living in Vegas.
Meh, I don't consider it "wrong," it's just different. And not for all tastes.
Are there any other places in the USA that repulse you, or is Vegas unique in that distinction?

Vegas is not a city full of happy people and it
comes across that way. Great place to visit,
though.
I do agree it dose not have a great look and its hot in the summer. I would rather be in Lake Tahoe or something.
There are very nice places surrounding Las Vegas like, Henderson, Green Valley that have nice green grass, trees and look like any normal city. Even in Las Vegas they have gated communities with beautiful landscaping.
Quote: AxelWolfMost people could not handle living in Vegas especially tho's with roulette systems. In that case it would defiantly make it only fun to visit.
.
Defiantly? People visit Vegas defiantly? Who dose that?
Oops, I meant who DOES that, not 'dose'.
Dose: the amount of a medicine, drug, or vitamin that is taken at one time.

It's not a homey place, and it's not a happy place ... but it is a sunny place :)

Point conceded, LOL.
Quote: djatcIm a recent transplant and love it here. Aside from access to so many casinos for work purposes everything is open 24 hours, and the cost of living is extremely cheap. I don't drink but a semisharp AP can game drinks for cheap at the bar, and eat almost free at buffets which are literally just given away for miniscule play. Many hot women move here to be dancers, models, party pit dealers, etc so the level of talent goes up making it juicie, and the illusion of having discretionary gambling money opens up so many doors for free fine dining, freeroll tournaments, special treatment (caesers is the best for this IMO).
I think anyone who was around on Christmas would debate that point...hehe...
. That was awesome. Favorite djatc line, " I have cats that like to be petted and actually they are my roommates but whatever they are walking around and shit." Which of course in no way related to anything else in that thread.Quote: AcesAndEightsQuote: djatcIm a recent transplant and love it here. That's all stuff young single guys like,
I could care less about any of it. I
never drink in public, dislike buffets
as more than a once in awhile thing,
and am married, so hot women are
useless to me. You just illustrated in
spades why Vegas sucks as a place
to live many people.
Quote: IbeatyouracesIt isn't worth going to gamble either.
Sure it is, it's the only reason to go, it's
the only reason I go to Vegas. It's
convenient having all those casinos
so close together Downtown.
Quote: IbeatyouracesYour game its exactly the same everywhere you go whether there or Gun Lake. As a blackjack player, why go there? The lousy SD games? Save the travel expenses for bets at home. As I said, not worth it for straight up gambling.
Pretty sure Bob's primary game is roulette.
IBYA, I'm surprised you're taking this stance though. As a medium-level recreational card counter, Vegas is the spot. There are better places to play if you have scouting info on opportunities, but no jurisdiction has the volume of Vegas, and for someone like me who doesn't really get into advanced advantage plays, volume is key to getting a lot of action and being able to play multiple, short sessions. I can count cards around my hometown, but the casinos are sweaty, have $300 limits for the most part, and are inconveniently spread out. I view it as extended practice for when I do make it to Vegas.
And even if you're not an AP but like to gamble, there's no atmosphere like Vegas. If I just played craps, sure I could schlep my bankroll up to my local Indian casino and futz around, but it's just not the same in terms of atmosphere and variety. Plus there's no free booze in my jurisdiction.
Anyway, I think living in Vegas has dulled you to its bright lights :). There is a huge attraction there for a wide variety of gamblers.
I disagree on this one. I have seen so many gamblers mentioning about "the book" but most of them have no idea about what "basic strategy" is. Instead, if you mention about "basic strategy", I think it will be a red flag.

I plead the mickeycrimm amendment. Whatever I said drunk doesn't count..... until I get suspended here.
Quote: IbeatyouracesAs an AP, I can see going there. As a non AP, you can get the same value, if not better at home. That's my point. I can understand the experience and all that jazz, but I'm strictly talking gambling, nothing else.
If be an idiot to say, "Lets go to Vegas to play TCP."
For someone who truly just cares about that action (boss), I can see your point.
are looking for explanations, not excuses.

I really don't like the whole blog though. Grosjean comes across as angry and bitter. Is this what gambling professionally does to you? Compare to the writing in the original Beyond Counting, or in some of his papers on beyondcounting.com, and the difference is like night and day. Back then, he came across as funny, and someone who liked the idea of matching wits with the casino and using his brain to win money. It seemed like he enjoyed the puzzle part of is as much as the money part of it. He did take jabs at casino staff, but it was light-hearted and funny.
Now he just comes across as a bitter old man who hates everyone. Except, he is not an old man. I see similar stuff in the writing of some other gamblers (eg, LVBear). It makes me wonder if it's the job that is doing that to these people.
The guy is still undoubtedly a genius, and I have tremendous respect for him, but I wonder if he would have been better off if he had used his intelligence in another pursuit.

To me he seems impatient and resentful
that he's writing the blog. He comes across
as thinking he's so much better than the casino,
and other AP's. He does everything right and
only him. It does wear a little thin.
A bit off topic, but I've also liked the wall papering in the mens' room at the LVH.
on it? There was a full length pic of Ann Margret
in a bikini when you went into the main bathroom
at MGM. It was there for years. Somebody was
always drawing pubic hair on the bikinis crotch
and the casino was always scrubbing it off.
I had to chuckle when I saw it, so juvenile, and
yet still funny.
Quote: WizardI must confess I've told the joke about the difference between praying in a casino and church quite a few times. Never realized it is so old.

Individual class of AP's always think they are superior to other AP's, or, as Grosjean
put it "primordial ooze".
There's a UK forum called moneysavingexpert where you have what is technically
the lowest form of AP known: sports bonus hustlers raking in £5 a time or less on
some crappy offer. They look down their noses at "risk-taking" gamblers who are all
"mug punters" apparently.
It's just tribal psychology.

I can understand that. Many pros are that way
in music and the arts. Even math geniuses are
very competitive. They hated Einstein and tried
to prove him wrong, but failed. When you get
to the top of any field you tend to look down
on those beneath you.
Yes, I removed the RSS. Same for discountgambling.net . Seems silly to have the RSS if there is nothing happening.Quote: bigfoot66Grosjean hasn't posted a new blog in over 6 weeks. Yeah, what happened with discountgambling?
Stephen works mainly on behalf of AP's who don't want him to publish his stuff any more. It's especially curious because Stephen is anything but an AP himself. Stephen has also gone a more professional route as a gaming mathematician (though he does not charge enough for his work).Quote: AxiomOfChoiceYeah, what happened with discountgambling?

Oh, I see. Good for him! (Except for the not charging enough part)
For a long time, Stephen wouldn't accept payment at all for his game analysis. Clients would "force" him to take $200 or $300. It made things very tough for other gaming mathematicians who were trying to feed their families. Now, I think he asks about half what I would charge for the same work (if I was still doing such work). As you might be able to deduce, Stephen is not money-driven.Quote: AxiomOfChoiceOh, I see. hmmm...Is that against the rules? I would think one could retract and delete something if they wanted.Quote: IbeatyouracesI just noticed that a bunch of replies that were added the other day have been deleted.
Seriously I don't know why you are asking that. I was asking a question. I don't know the rules on deleting posts and was asking the rules. As I was typing the question, I was thinking if one should be able to delete a post. I thought it should be ok to do so, so I voiced my opinion.Quote: IbeatyouracesWTF is your problem????
Nothing was directed at you in a derogatory fashion whatsoever. I have never had any issues with you, so I don't know why you think it was meant that way.
I apologize if I have somehow offended you. I have never wanted to offend you, I like you and most all of your posts and what you have to say.
I don't think we have ever had any issues and always got along. What am I missing? feel free to PM me, if I have missed something. Perhaps there is a misunderstanding somewhere. Perhaps I made a joke and it was taken the wrong way. I can't think of anything.
ZERO ISSUES as a matter of fact it's just the opposite, you're one of my favorite members and always have been. I can't think of any instance where there has been anything that would've given you that suggestion. If you know of one please PM it to me so I can clear it up. Perhaps you may have missed a joke or I was just busting your balls.Quote: IbeatyouracesYou just seen to have an issue with me. If I've construed it the wrong way, I apologize.
I Don't know what posts you are referring to.Can you paraphrase what they were about and who? Just curious what kinds of posts where there would be a flurry of deleting going on.
