Been going to Vegas for 36 years, sleeping in any
Vegas hotel can be awful. You go to bed at 3am
and at 7am the Mormons and Jehovahs Witnesses
who went to bed at 11 are up and at em, slamming
their doors and laughing and whooping it up in the
halls. They have no idea how much noise they're making
because they never sleep in.

Here's what I do after years of trial and error. First get
a good set of new ear plugs, the roll up and insert in ear
kind. Next get a set of the malleable clear silicon type,
they're soft and form fit over the roll up plugs, blocking
the ear canal completely. Finally a pair of noise suppression
muffs, the kind construction workers wear. These three
precautions will block out voices, and most noise. It will
not completely block door slams, but they'll be very quiet and
seem a long way away.

Next comes sleeping posture. Ask housekeeping to bring two
extra pillows, so you have 4 total. Make an incline out of them
at the head of the bed. When you lay down, the base of your
spine will be at the bottom and you'll be at about a 35 degree
incline. This is actually the way you should be sleeping anyway.
On your back, at an incline. None of your limbs will fall asleep,
you won't toss and turn, your back will never ache, blood won't
pool in your head, and your organs will stay where they should
be all night long. Top it off with a comfortable sleep mask, the
padded kind, and a Breathe Right strip across your nose to open
the nasal passages for easy breathing and you're all set.

Feet stretched out, arms at your side, its the
perfect position for the sensory deprivation you need to sleep
in a Vegas hotel room. Or anywhere else.

So either find a quiet hotel or one with an ebb and flow that is too your liking such as a room in amongst some others who roll in drunk as a skunk at 3:00am and think that a 7:00am breakfast is an unmitigated horror. Some people really are just getting to their rooms at 7:00am but mainly its the early risers who are getting up and ready to start their day. Its a vacation for many of them and they see no reason to sleep it off every morning when they can do that the other fifty weeks of the year. The casino is open and serves free coffee ... and some people are there bright and early and greeting those who are still there from the night before.

The Desert Inn has been closed for quite a while now.

Find a better hotel

I generally go to bed at 3am and sleep till
11 or 12. By that time the maid force is just
about done slamming doors and chattering
in the halls of any Vegas hotel. Can you
recommend one where the maids don't get
started till after noon? Thanks.

I will say that when I have stayed in Vegas the maids hit the rooms earlier than anywhere I have ever been. But I am one of the people up early so it was great. Beat the crowds to the buffet and table.

How about the people who go to bed at midnite and then are waken by the drunks yelling in the halls at 3am...works both ways

Either way, noise suppression is a must. Its the number
one complaint on the Vegas trip report forums. Loud
sounds that keep you awake or wake you up.

Which Vegas hotel are you staying in where roving gangs of Mormons and JWs are a problem? I'm always up at 7am, in Vegas or otherwise. There's nothing quite like a peaceful, complimentary, downtown breakfast... regardless of food quality.

Is there any tips to help one sleep on his back? I find it impossible. The introvert in me requires the good ol' fetal position. Blood pooling in my head does explain a lot.

You have to do it on an incline, like you are when you're
in a recliner. Thats how I discovered this, I had to sleep
in a recliner for a few months for medical reasons 15 years
ago and I never slept better. Now I do it with pillows in
the bed.

Noise is the number one complaint in most hotels and in many condo situations as well. Some really shabby conversions have no noise suppression at all.

When a major NYC skyscraper needed emergency welding on a secret basis, the architect's malpractice insurer put up all the out of town union welders in a hotel and resolved noise complaints by shortly buying the hotel so it could close nightclub shows and bars and re-assign floors as needed.

Noise and other quality of sleep problems are often a question in aviation investigations, particularly for regional airlines wherein young pilots have no clout for voicing concerns about where they will be housed or how noisy it may be.

Yeah me neither. But I'm a pretty heavy sleeper.

As you get older you have to pee several times during the night anyhow. The most important thing is every time you wake up or are woken up by noise etc. is that you piss even if you don't feel like you need to. Having a bucket next to the bed also helps for obvious reasons but of course be careful not to knock it over when you do finally get up. Place it about a step away from the bed.

Placing the wastepaper basket on the floor about a foot from the bed is what you do for young broads who've imbibed way beyond their limits. They never make it to the porcelain in time and they stupidly want to hug it when they do get there.

If you are awakening to urinate so many times a night .... well, perhaps Doc will give us a lecture on rostroventrolateral iron-oxygen sensitive areas of the brain. You can usually borrow a recording pulse oximeter FREE, usually delivered to you free of charge, just be sure to turn the alarm beep to OFF and hit Printout before returning the equipment.
