It isn't getting any cheaper to fly to Vegas, so I have been
collecting Frequent Flier credits whenever I rent a car.

For example, right now Hertz has Triple Credits with Airtran
even for 1 day rentals. I usually keep an eye on whatever
specials happen to currently be on the Airtran and Southwest
Airlines websites.

And weekend rates are pretty reasonable. I can generally
get an intermediate size car ( Toyota Carolla, etc ) for
about $ 30 for one day, tax and misc fees included.

At that price, if I have to drive 100 miles or more on a
weekend day, I'll often rent a car to get the frequent
flier miles. I got the same rate on Good Friday when
I had to take care of some family businesss 150 miles
away.

Of course it helps that I live about 5 miles from a regional
airport, so getting there to rent a car is easy.

It is a nice bonus that the company I work for has a corp
jet at that airport, so we have a small lot at the flight
ops hangar that is usually empty on weekends where I
can park for free.

Also, from time to time, both Airtran and SWA have a
credit card offer on their website that gives you 2 RT
airline tix after your first purchase. There is an annual
fee for those cards, though.

Caveat Emptor:

- Airtran has very very limited flights available for the
- basic travel award. I mean borderline "bait and
- switch" type of limited availability.

I rented from Alamo Good Friday and got 600 points on my S.W. card. 1 day rental.
59$ fee for S.W. card, but hey, spend x amount in x amount of time, pay the fee, get 2 free flights, pay it off, stop using it and you are good to go.

It seems like the bonus offer for Airline related credit cards flips back and forth from 1 flight to 2 flights frequently.

I got 2 flights with an AIRTRAN card and 2 flights with a UNITED card. The United Airlines card has a higher
annual fee, but I think my first bag flies free, so that helps. Using these flights to get to LV in July.
