Coming to Vegas this weekend and am curious if anyone here has eaten at pops cheesesteaks. I spent two years in high school living in Philly in 99-01 and have never been able to find a legit cheesesteak since I left. And believe me I have looked, so far nothing has compared to the authentic Philly cheesesteak. I'm interested in what people familiar think of this place, especially any member who may have grown up in or visited Philadelphia. Thanks for the help.

I am a philly guy having lived there for 8 years prior to relocating to Vegas. First things that I missed besides my Philly sports teams, was a decent cheesesteak, Tastykakes and Yuengling lager beer. UMM, all three comprise the perfect meal.

I have been able to locate Tastykakes here, but up til now, no really good cheesesteak and Yuengling is out of the question. Early on another Philly transplant directed me to Capriotti's telling me the owner was from south Philly. A little research proved that was not true. The original family was from neighboring Delaware, although it's all corporate and franchised now. Capriotti's makes a decent cheesesteak, certainly better than any of those commercial mall type shops that have 'Philly' in their store name. But what Cap's is really missing was the decent roll which, being a philly guy, you know is half the battle.

Recently on another site, this topic came up and someone mentioned Pop's to me, which I wasn't familiar with. I have not gotten over there yet, but the poster claims Pop's is Philly, through and through, right down to the Amoroso Rolls from South Philly.

I will try to get over there in the next couple days, which has been on my to-do list for a week now and report back to you before the weekend.

Thanks kewl I'd appreciate it. I'd be interested to know where I could get some tastykakes if you don't mind giving up the secrets lol. My mom would freak if I told her I could get her some when we have our family vacation to Vegas in may. Before living in Philly with my dad I had grown up in Baltimore with my mom, she's never been able to get her hands on some since she moved to Texas.

FWIW, Tastykakes are available in metro Portland area.

As is an authentic steak bomb.

AS is Taylor pork roll.

Go figure.

I've eaten there. It's on Decatur right across from Arizona Charlie's casino. If you sign up on their website, they'll send you regular email discounts like free sides when you get a sandwich.

I've never been to Philly, but Pop's is good I thought. My impression: It's not small sliced beef and drippy cheese like Arby's, but rather a mushy, salty, wet gloop of beefy yellow-cheese-whiz-goodness bulging out of a long hoagie. I got one, and never went back, but it was tasty.

As promised, Just returned from lunch at Pops. Interesting place. Not going to say it was the best cheesesteak that I have ever had, but definitely the best I've had in Vegas. It was very good. I would put it in the best 4 or 5 that I have had. And the roll, Amorosa rolls from Philly was wonderful. I was expecting it might be half stale or something, but no....VERY fresh. Just like it was baked this morning.

Pops is set up in the tradition of the Philly cheesesteak places, Gino, Pats and Tony Lukes, where you order through a window and eat outside. There is no indoor seating. They do have a roof over the eating area, with ceiling fans. I am not a big fan of places where you eat outside, if it is right next to a major road and Pops eating area is about 3 feet off of Decatur, with cars, trucks and buses whizzing by coughing up their exhaust.

Pops carries tastykakes as well, with about a dollar markup over the east coast retail price. They also were quite fresh. It's a little out of the way for me, but I am pretty sure I will make the trip fairly regularly. :)
