I'm a man of simple pleasures, and one of the great joys for me is finding a mismatch between price and quality in the market. In other words, I love a bargain.

Case in point: the following are actual quotes from both Expedia & Orbitz for Las Vegas hotel rooms on Thursday, February 7:

Aria: $112
Venetian/Palazzo: $149
Cosmpolitan: $170
Rio: $179
Flamingo: $185

My definition of "quality" is subjective, but there's no way I would ever pay $185 to sleep at Flamingo when I could stay at the Venetian or Aria for less (even with resort fees). I'm sure that the laws of capitalism are still working on February 7, because at the end of the day it all comes down to supply and demand.

But never forget this rule: the most expensive product is not necessarily the nicest.

Just checked what I would pay @ cet properties for Feb 7th, 2013.

Nobu $249
Paris$166
Flam$161
Cae $118
PH $95
Har$71
Rio$41
Ballys$20
Quad$0.

While I would go for comp over pay any time I would rather go to Caesars over Paris over Flamingo.

How is Flamingo more then Caesars?

Believe it or not, not everyone here gambles in mass quantities. If it wasn't for CET's "Race to Rewards", I'd be pretty screwed with regards to "comps".

Good point. It depends on the purpose of the trip. For a trip solely devoted to gambling, I'll accept a bargain Total Rewards room offer at Imperial Palace, Flamingo, Bally's. But if it's a romantic getaway with my wife, we stay someplace a bit more extravagant-- Encore or Venetian. When it comes to comps, the Venetian tends to ignore a low roller like me.

I agree, it's totally crazy. But there's probably a very simple explanation: inventory. Ceasars has a glut of empty rooms, whereas Flamingo is almost sold out.

A one-way United Airlines ticket from San Francisco to Honolulu on Saturday January 26 is $489. A one way ticket on the same airline on the same day from San Francisco to Monterey, California is $733. (San Francisco is just 76 miles from Monterey.) The fuel costs for a 2300 mile flight are staggeringly greater than the fuel costs for a 76 mile flight. But the ticket price is influenced more by seat inventory than by costs. The same Monterey flight is only $250 on Wednesday, January 24, probably due to a glut of seats.
