probably should know the answer to this but i dont

was just at a local casino- count was very very high
had table max out and got ace of clubs jack of spades, full table i had the only face on the table, dealer had an ace up- i took even money and then proceeded to put max insurance up- dealer had blackjack and floor had no idea what to do on the insurance,
it was my understanding insurance is a seperate side bet- I had two hands up took full insurance on one hand, seat 2 had a 700 bet up and did not want insurance, I gues I could have slid him money since it was a big edge- but floor ended up ruling I could not take insurance one my blackjack hand, is this correct?
The bet will not be paid- not now not ever

Taking 'even money' on your 'Blackjack' is equivalent to putting out a full Insurance bet so, in a sense, you did insure the Blackjack hand.

Even money is just another name for insurance. It's the same bet, just that since you get an automatic bet and a half iff the dealer doesn't have blackjack it works out to the same. So what you were asking was to take twice the allowable amount of insurance.
The trick to poker is learning not to beat yourself up for your mistakes too much, and certainly not too little, but just the right amount.

In a game where BJ pays 3:2, even money MEANS you took the insurance -- buying another player's insurance depends on the house rules.

In today's gaming environmnent (since you didn't provide the details) with BJ paying 6:5, there is no such thing as no even money.

The question would be: Take the sidebet on what? The hand that's been resolved and is no longer in play? There was nothing to take the sidebet on, that's why you were denied. You can't have a sidebet without a contract bet. Try this: sit down at a bj table with a built in sidebet like 21+3 or Lucky Ladies, etc. Place the sidebet but not the blackjack bet (the contract bet). See how far you get just trying to play the sidebet. My guess is that unless the dealer makes a mistake and deals you cards your action will be refused outright.

Insuring another player's hand was mentioned in the original post so allow me to offer some thoughts. I've done it many times and it can be quite lucrative however there are some things to consider. With a stranger there is always the possibility that you won't get your money. Know as best you can who you are dealing with because you will have very little if any recourse. This play can quickly draw heat in some pits especially if you insure 15s and 16s in high counts so try to be aware or what is tolerated. It varies widely.
