I am having a hard time buying the amount put in the Las Vegas paper for the 8 minute fireworks show...$200 MILLION

They put a show on the Detroit river each June and it lasts about 40 minutes from three different barges and they say its a MILLION dollar show...so I know they want to make it sound grand in Vegas but unless those things are made of solid gold I aint buying it

The Boston one on the Fourth of July is 2.5 million. The 200 million has to be a typo or something.

Or includes the costs associated with crowd control, traffic management, overtime, etc.

I will say this, the fireworks on the strip were absolutely spectacular. Best show I have ever seen by far. Fireworks going off 7 different casino rooftops simaltaniously. The don't shoot them off 1 or two at a time either. The whole 8 minutes is a constant barrage similar to the grand finale of most fireworks shows. Now that said, I don't know how it could cost 200 million. I think that must be a misprint or possible that was the cost of the whole new years celebration, closing the strip, tons of extra police, portable toilets, rerouting traffic and buses, closing escalators and so on and so forth. But even that sounds way out of line.

My alma mater puts on a fireworks show every year for about $20,000 and it is almost always the best one I see in any year. Even if the fireworks are 100 times better in Vegas, that only accounts for $2 million. I'd love to see a breakdown of those costs.
I heart Crystal Math.

The only time I have heard $200 million used, other than in that one article, is that Vegas takes in $200 million in "non-gaming-related" income on New Year's Eve.

I agree with kewlj. It was an awesome show, and seeing it happening all around you was quite unique. However, there is NO WAY the fireworks are $200M.
That has to be the total cost of the NYE celebration, including cost of police, shutting down LVB, and the clean up afterwards.

I just got an email from Tix4Tonight that included a little blurb on this:

"January Trivia - Did you know that Las Vegas spent over $500,000 on a spectacular 8-minute fireworks show to ring in the New Year? More than 80,000 fireworks were launched from the rooftops of seven different strip properties. The fireworks show titled "America's Party," was choreographed to a soundtrack that included "Raise Your Glass," by Pink and "Titanium" by David Guetta. The most touching part of the fireworks display wasn't just about celebrating the new year, but also the past, with 26 of the fireworks set as a memorial to symbolize the 26 lives lost during the Newtown shooting. It's probably easier and safer and cheaper to stage them from a barge in a river than from the rooftops of a city in a desert. They have to clear out sections of Fantasyland and hose it down nightly just to do fireworks in WDW and Disneyland. So it's not just the pyrotechnics themselves running up the bill.

1$ per noisemaker rocket, boom, so that accounts for $80,000. I can't imagine a bulk purchase of pro-fire works individually costs that much -- but at $3 per rocket that would be half the cost. Wouldn't most of it come from some place like China?
