Wow, do you know something the market doesn't know? You can buy the May 10 calls for a 1.35. That gives you 165 days or less to be right. Go for it!

Just a quick look shows a huge revenue jump last quarter in NTEK. What caused it?
The Balance Sheet, however, is terrible. Initially inclined to think that it's overvalued, but that's from my long term perspective.

One of my long term picks is bouncing like a dead cat today, XXIA. Had I bought it when I recommended it, I'd still be losing a buttload of money. Another one that I don't own, HELE is also rising today. Fortunately, HELE has been on a steady rise for the last three months or even longer. I like HELE.

I just sold ALL my stock today. Every last one. I'm going to harvest some capital gains this year since it has been a low year for me income-wise (yay, unemployment!).

I'll reinvest it all soon. I have no cash considerations coming up.

teddys, I've been in the process of liquidation over the past couple of months. In my case, I believe that we're in for a good sized market correction. I'm probably about 60% done, although there are a couple of issues that I want to continue to hold.

I don't think that WND.v is trading anymore........

VANCOUVER , May 21, 2013 /CNW/ - Western Wind Energy Corp. -- (the "Company" or "Western Wind") (TSX Venture Exchange -- "WND") (OTCQX -- "WNDEF") today announced that WWE Equity Holdings Inc., an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners L.P., has completed its compulsory acquisition of the outstanding common shares ("Common Shares") of Western Wind, at a price of $2.60 in cash per Common Share, pursuant to the notice of compulsory acquisition made under Section 300 of the Business Corporations Act (British Columbia), and now owns 100% of the outstanding Common Shares.

Unfortunately, there apparently was a reason that I felt remorse on selling CCIH at $8.74, since as of this writing it is now $14.43........ain't that a kick in the head.......

You bagged a double in a very short timeNever cry about making a profit.

The guys that are buying CCIH as it's going up are the traders that hit home runs.

Example, big player would buy 1000 shares of CCHI at 5. Then 2000 at 7. Then 4000 @ 9. Pyramiding. Always with trailing stop loss. Yada, yada, yada

I guess what is really pissing me off is the fact that I let my macro view of the market, my suspicion of a good sized up coming market decline, dictate lightening up on 50% of our portfolio. The others that I have sold, haven't hurt. But CCIH is hurting. I left a whole bunch on the table by doing something that I hadn't done in all of my investing years.

Stock prices are governed by the laws of supply (float) and demand. It's difficult to know when demand will pickup or fall off. Company buy backs or secondary offers will affect float but most honest traders/investors when successful will chalk it up to luck.

It's very difficult to outperform the indexes.

Nobody really knows where stock prices are going.....educated guesses at best.

If an investor/trader knows what direction a stock is headed then that person has information that is unknown to the market......insider trading

I would agree with you if you are discussing daytrading. Otherwise, for investors, I believe that you can ascertain whether an equity is fairly priced for a long term hold.

Again, I agree but only to the extent that you are discussing daytrading.

Only when daytrading. Otherwise (I know I'm repeating myself here) you can ascertain whether it is fairly priced and, if you have the patience, you can profit from it. It's not easily done since you need to have some forecasting skills and be able to determine current value based on future forecasted events.

Yeah I get you Steeldco. Trying to pick winners is fun.

I shop off the 52 week high list looking for stocks with large volume increases. Breakout stocks. Most pull back and retest highs or fall back to support levels. Many fail but occasionally you can catch a big move.

Buy high and sell higher.

In regards to beating the market, see table below. I know it's a small sample size, but I am encouraged (assuming that my math is correct).
The stock screen that I run has nearly doubled up the market average (defined as the S&P 500). But........I would like to see the comps
during a period of a market decline.

Date of Screen Screen AS of: 01/12/14 Annualized Annualized S&P 500 AS of: 01/12/14 Annualized Annualized
Run Days Held Investment Gain (Loss) $ Gain % Gain Investment Gain (Loss) $ Gain % Gain
9/9/2013 125 $3,967 $573 $1,650 41.59% $1,653 $189 $545 32.98%
10/9/2013 95 $1,235 $125 $474 38.38% $1,656 185.97 $705 42.55%
11/9/2013 64 $727 $79 $445 61.30% $1,771 71.76 $404 22.80%

100xOdds, I'm sorry but I can't answer your question. I strictly use just the fundamentals. Charts have never done well by me.

ok, bought 500 shares of psem @ $9.
doh.. then it dropped. closed at $8.88.

Yep. It happens. Individual issues will directionally follow the market. The S&P was down 1.26%, but PSEM was down more than I would have expected given what the market had done. I suspect it is due to the fact that it is a lightly traded issue.

So I was curious and tried to get some of the filings on the company. The last filing I found was a Form 15, which is CERTIFICATION AND NOTICE OF TERMINATION OF REGISTRATION UNDER SECTION 12(g) OF THE SECURITIES EXCHANGE ACT OF 1934 OR SUSPENSION OF DUTY TO FILE REPORTS UNDER SECTIONS 13 AND 15(d) OF THE SECURITIES EXCHANGE ACT OF 1934. This was for Nanotech Entertainment in Nevada.

When I look up symbol NTEK, it shows as:
NanoTech Entertainment, Inc.
2450 Kruse Drive
San Jose, CA 95131

I'm not sure what is going on. Maybe Nanotech of Nevada was a different company? Dissolved maybe?
I guess the other option is that they moved. But it's bothersome that I can't get any filing on Edgar.

So maybe the stock market action of yesterday, and again today, are the beginnings of the market correction that I had suspected, and had prepared for by raising cash. I wish no ill will and would be almost as happy if it doesn't happen, but I still believe that it will. Monday will be interesting.........

An initial dip to around 1,675 on the S&P feels about right......then it will be time to re-assess.

As noted the last few days and today saw some opportunities opening up, IF one believes this is a shake-out of the weak hands.

I do believe this, and saw IGT drop about 15% today from 18ish to 15ish. My alarms went off on my general watch-list, and I also had to stop-loss (just a few pennies/share literally) on YHOO. So some freed-up capital now exists.

Thoughts on IGT at 15 to 15.50 after a large drop today... It does look oversold, but may be subject more general bad-news. While not a baby with bath-water scenario, IGT does look like a value-play with a 6-12 month horizon.

Anyone else?
Some people need to reimagine their thinking.

98Clubs,
I'm not sure that I would entirely agree with you regarding IGT being a value play. On a revenue and net income basis it is, however when I look at the balance sheet I fear that it is not so great. A current ratio of just over 1 with a whole bunch of long term debt scares me off, particularly in light of the general market conditions. I would suspect it will become an even greater value later.

98Clubs,
Also, to support my position that the Balance Sheet is not good is that I calculated the Altman Z-Score and it came out to 1.99, which is awfully poor. Maybe I miscalculated? If someone would check it, that'd be great.

Fundamental and technical analysis have their place in picking stocks but everybody and I mean everybody is looking at the same stuff. No stone is unturned.

I'm releasing a simple little system today and today only for free.

1) Find a company that has a large analyst community following it .......10 or more recommendations. Strong Buy, Buy, Neutral, Market Perform, Accumulate, Sell......etc.

2) When the consensus is strongly biased to buy or strong buy, short the stock. Everybody is in.....not to say that you won't take some pain (stock continues to move up) but a point (bad news) major profit taking will overwhelm stock.

Apple was loved by everybody at 710. Went to 360ish even though company was doing great.

I think that I would have to disagree with you on this "system". Mind you, I could easily be wrong since I do not follow analyst recommendations. However, I would think that the run up to 710 for Apple was probably with all of the analysts on board at some point during the move.

BTW, I would guess that everybody was on board when Apple hit somewhere between 300 and 400......just a guess.

I would disagree on this only because I have looked at stocks this way with 10+ analyst following it and saying it is a strong buy...3 stocks I had kept track of performed very well, especially the one I own. I bought HIBB(hibbet sporting goods) when it was about $11 a share, it now is trading between $60-$65 a share after a 3 for 2 split

have $50k to speculate.
any recommendation for some stocks, and why those?

My main pick has been a company called Athersys(ATHX)- I had originally posted about the Company on this thread January 7th, 2013 at 11:20:41 AM with a summary. At that time, the stock was trading at $1.19 and now it's at $3.78 after having its worst day, yesterday, in a long time. Of course it's relative as the stock has tripled over the past year and still remains a volatile, risky situation. Since the time of my original post, their story has only gotten better and everything is setup for a spectacular 2014- but- that assumes one of their upcoming catalysts goes well. We will know in late April/early May. I don't have time for a major update, but just caught this thread and thought I'd review having posted here before. Anyway, as the Market has been acting "weird" lately, we have even more volatility so nimble traders may be able to take advantage of the situation as they were able to do yesterday. If you want a speculation, it's something to consider, but please do your own diligence and recognize depending on the Company's results in April/May, it's going to be a polar situation...

TheBigPaybak, congrats on your pick of ATHX! Nicely done!
Keep them coming, but do me a favor and wait until we've at least touched 1,675 on the S&P 500.

So far, so good with ATHX, although sadly we aren't out of the woods yet: come May, we'll know. Other than that, a few other ideas but they're less risky, long-term holds. Time will tell, been too busy to really track anything beyond my core holding at this point...
