Additions to Wizard Review:
In July the South Point added a new hotel tower and now has 2163 rooms with the top floor containing all suites. If you must have a suite, it is much more affordable at this casino.
----------
I would rent a car, the shuttles are not particularly convenient. There are some advantage to the four casinos in the Southern Urban Area (Silverton, South Coast, Green Valley, and M Resort) especially concerts. It is difficult to get around without a car.

I've stayed at the South Point several times. The rooms are huge, the beds very comfortable, and price is very reasonable (and there are no hidden "Resort Fees"). The hotel is still pretty new, and the rooms and halls are in great shape. Like most LV hotels, the charge for internet is extremely high, but they do have an option to use Boingo (IIRC) which runs around $20 for a month. So, even if you're only staying for 2-3 days, this saves a lot for internet. Be sure to cancel when you are done, or this will be a recurring fee.
You definitely want a rental car if you are going to go anywhere outside of the hotel. I've found you can rent a car for three days for about the same price as the cab fare to and from the airport!
Anyway, if you want to stay at a pretty luxurious hotel for a great price and don't need to be on the Strip, South Point is a great choice.

South Point "Private" Sale.... email announcing a seven day "private sale" for dates from now to the end of the year.
Sale is Noon (Pacific Time) of July 24 thru Noon of July 31.
Note: Fairly prominent display of an additional surcharge of 14.00 per day Resort Fee.
Midweek From: 30 Weekend: From 60
These regular and routine private sales followed by much publicized public sales show what the real rates for rooms are: pretty good bargains unless you are really and truly interested in going to The Strip all the time.

The CURRENT 72 hour sale ends noon Jan 14th.
New rates.
Mid week 49 plus 21 resort fee
Weekend 89 plus 21 resort fee.
Same advice. Large clean rooms, only a few of which have a view of a wall.
It ain't the strip, but then it doesn't claim to be the strip.
Most important advice: Do your card counting ELSEWHERE. Even if you are 'red chipping'. Count elsewhere.
As usual, a more publicly announced sale will follow this "semi-private sale". You can book virtually any dates, but you have to move FAST to get these prices. Its not a bad place. Some Vegas regulars even book this place for visiting relatives since the rooms are so large compared to other hotels in the same price range.

What a scam these resort fees are and hopefully a certain 1st time Vegas visit sees this and books it.

Unlike some other properties, this hotel features VERY PROMINENT notices about the Resort Fees in ALL its electronic, print, online advertising and has LARGE type notices at the check in counter, not fine print notices the way some other places do.
