Has anyone played poker here recently? I remember walking through here in 2002, right before the poker boom, and thinking playing poker there would be scary!
Does it still have old-timey poker charm?
Binion's website says its poker room has "some of the best deals in the game, including a $4 rake on all cash games," which does not sound like a good deal. Does that mean it's $4 on every hand that sees a flop?! If so, that's nearly as bad as California casinos.

I believe it means that the 5% rake is capped at a total of $4 per hand. The rake is 5% on all the money put into the pot by bets, antes and blinds, and should never be interpreted as being applied to a single player. So yes, capping the rake at $4 is a good deal, especially if the pots frequently exceed $80.
So many better men, a few of them friends, are dead. And a thousand thousand slimy things live on, and so do I.

Sorry, I refer to cases of say, only the $1 + $3 blinds see a flop, so the rake is $4 for a pot that's $4. In some places, it's only $1 to see the flop.
Yes, if a pot exceeds $80, then it's indeed a good deal.

There are still places in town, like Orleans, that caps the rake at $3.00

You know what, I gotta believe if everyone folds after the flop, then the rake is only $1. They can't be that evil.
Can they?
Can they?

No, no, no. It is not 5%. It is 10% and taking it in anything resembling the confiscatory California style rake procedures, let alone the ludicrous obscene self-destructive rake of the two notoriously flaky (but also incredibly loosey-juicy & world's dumbest players) rooms in Arizona (metro Phoenix), would be a quick ticket to getting your Nevada gaming license rudely and expensively suspended. And if intentional then risk having it permanently revoked (yes it has happened for ex. at the former Las Vegas Club), no joke.
[EDIT: All references to 'rake' below refer exclusively to the rake that goes into the HOUSE box, and not to the promo drop, if any, which is always kept physically separate and handled under different procedures.]
In Nevada the rake can NEVER exceed 10% of the pot in any cash game, ever. Not for a moment. Not just a good idea, for both players and for maintaining the long-term health of the business, it is also the law (per NV Gaming). There are detailed procedures for exactly when and how each chip is to be taken from the center of the table and precisely where it must be displayed next to the specified slot in plain view of all players and cameras, and any deviation is a serious gaming violation that can and will and most definitely does result in fines and license suspensions, for individuals and their supervisors and employers. But,the cap on the total is voluntary, at the discretion of the casino.
So, in any NV licensed poker room the first chip can only be taken (at the soonest) once the pot (sum total of all bets & raises which have been called) is at or above $10. And then, if the pot is only at say $19, but not yet quite to $20 for example, and now a flaky dealer pulls out a second chip already, that's a serious gaming violation in Nevada, which is seriously enforced. And if you ever see any non-trivial amount or possibly intentional or persistently careless or any amount of repetitive over-raking of > 10% happening at a NV cash game poker table you should stop the action right away as it happens, and if the dealer is not responsive be prepared to damn well yell for the floor at the top of your lungs if necessary AND be dialing Gaming Enforcement if you don't get taken very seriously and I mean immediately, no joke. That's in Nevada, because in the interests of promoting their continued healthy existence NV Gaming insists on merely shearing the sheep at cash poker tables, not summarily slaughtering them. At Inglewood, CA or Scottsdale, AZ, well, ehhh, fuggedaboudit, u.r. screwed, just relax & bend over, or else grasp your rack firmly with both hands & run away - pick one.
Binion's is 10% max with a $4 cap, which is standard, nothing to really brag about. Not a particularly good deal, or especially bad either. Not that it matters, because Binion's doesn't get much cash game business at all; hasn't in years now. They've had better luck holding onto some of their tournament business. For cash game rake, there are definitely some better, as mentioned in another post above with the example of the $3 cap at the Orleans, which through no accident is now a MUCH busier bigger room with a thriving small stakes business. And some of the biggest most serious rooms with the most business of all, outside of their really high stakes games that take a time charge instead of raking the pot, generally have a $4 cap for mid to smallish stakes but choose to take it slower than the absolute immediate 10% max at every step which would be permitted, such as not taking the second chip until $30 & not going to the self-imposed cap of $4 until $50. But that's at the premier rooms.
For most run-of-the-mill rooms a straightforward 10% taken immediately upon reaching each $10 pot increment, up to a cap of $4 max, is most common. Just like what Binion's says they'll do, if and when they get a cash game or two. To find worse, you'd need to punish yourself by going to one of the Caesars affiliated rooms, which are notorious for the absolute highest rake in Southern Nevada with a $5 cap (with some shifting promotional "reduced" rake exceptions that I don't bother keeping up with). Which is why (with the apparent exception of Caesars Palace these days) their poker room business has been mostly in the crapper for years, outside of several weeks around the WSOP.
EDIT to add: If you're going to be downtown exclusively, and you're looking for cash game poker, then you're probably looking solely at Golden Nugget or bust these days. But the Nugget should be reliable for having multiple small stakes cash tables running at just about any hour. Be aware that money (paper bills on the table) is in play there, not just chips, so someone's stack may be deeper than it looks at first glance. But if you do get in a game at Binion's it isn't likely to be intimidating at all. Those long gone ghosts of Binion's glory days have mostly starved to death or taken up panhandling in another part of town by now, Any cash game there in recent years is usually made up of local nits buying in for the bare minimum & watching the clock tick while sitting there scamming some action killing promo. And "local" does not mean good at poker, by the way. Many locals have been sucking in exactly the same way every day for decades.
