Quote: RonCQuote: GialmereUh oh burners. The feds (and Reno) have issues with your festival.
(Another story on it.)
Thanks for posting the second link...
Shouldn't the festival pay for the costs of clean-up to the area they visit as part of the process of getting their permits?
Do they leave a mess?
There is a cottage industry that grew out of cherry picking crap left behind from tailgating at games and concerts I can only imagine what gets lost at a nine day festival.
Imagine being a tourism based town minding its own business when suddenly 80,000 people emerge from the desert, each carrying all the garbage they generated over the last week. They fill every trashcan and dumpster in the city to overflowing. Then, broke and exhausted, most immediately leave without playing a single slot machine. Kind of rude.
Quote: GialmereThere's a "leave no trace" policy which is, of course, impossible for an event of such scale. However, it's evidently just "possible" enough to upset Reno and I can appreciate the biggest little city's position.

I agree
Garbage stinks. No way people are bringing it home
They are all dumping at the 1st gas station they see
Sucks for Reno
These folks need to pay for their own trash to be disposed of instead of using the resources of others. I get tossing a bag of fast food stuff in the trash while at the filling station getting some gas...but not days worth of crap.
Quote: RonCIt isn't okay to create a whole lot of trash and then have someone else pay to have it handled.

If I'm paying hundreds of dollars to stay in a tent city for ten days, I expect trash removal to be included. If not, you have more fuel for your bonfire.
https://blog.showclix.com/showclix-addresses-burning-mans-high-demand-main-sale/
This is from the company Showclix regarding ticket sales
"For any high-demand on-sale, we anticipate and prepare for a number of situations. Shortly after ticket sales went live, we noticed an isolated service performing slowly. We have systems in place to automatically resolve these issues if they occur. When the automated system did not respond as quickly as anticipated, we made the decision to manually intervene. Unfortunately, this manual intervention caused unintended side effects that ultimately lead to the issues that many of you experienced. Bot traffic is also something that we deal with routinely and are prepared for. It was not the primary cause for Wednesday’s issues but contributed to a slow system recovery."

I see Burning Man organizers are pretty furious about new regulations they have to follow to use the public land
They claim that the dumpster requirement is "“logistically and financially crippling."
WTF
Every large event in the country takes care of trash so the BM excuse is pure BS
Nearby residents are pretty furious at the junk BM leaves behind
Last year they left a Boeing 747 behind. WTF.
Follow the rules or hold this event on private land
How did they get away with holding this event on public land for so long and then dumping trash in the surrounding communities
Seems like a greedy selfish organization.

Quote: LoquaciousMoFWI get b=23.728ish
a=32
A=22.75
B=16.5
sin(A)=0.3867
sin(B)=0.2840
a b
----- = -----
sin(A) sin(B)
32 b
------ = ------
0.3867 0.2840
32(0.2840) b(0.2840)
---------- = ---------
0.3867 0.2840
9.0885
------ = b
0.3867
23.5027 = b
or b=23.502025885319938070982257659078 if you want to be pedantic.
The way I solved this was to first find the height, h, as:
sin(16.5) = h/32.
h = 32*sin(16.5) = 9.0885
Then solve for B as:
sin(a) = sin(22.75) = 9.0885/B
B = 9.0885/sin(22.75)
B = 23.502
You can also use the law of sines, which says sin(b)/B = sin(a)/A, which is what I did in a roundabout way.

The tl:dr on the thread is that a bunch of us (9 or so) jumped thru all the burning man hoops for a couple months of deadlines, and on the day tix were made available, the 3rd party vendor screwed it up in a major way. Registered applicants got jerked around for hours, but people who went on site incognito or via non-standard OS were able to buy immediately and repeatedly.
The event sold out within about an hour, but supposedly we were in a queue. That never updated from the stroke of 12 noon (except blarney filled platitudes) while other people went around the queue via side tunnels after the start time, and bought out the tickets we were waiting for.
You had to assume (imo) that it could be a processing issue, and that your assigned queue spot was held for you to purchase the tickets you were in line for, and the server knew you were in line, or it would have informed you there were no more tickets. But no, you were immediately in limbo and never served or counted instead. Not knowing that, you had to wait to either get to the processing screen or be notified the tickets were gone. Neither happened.
After about 2 hours, those of us in the queue were just bounced out (backward) to the queue sign-in page with no further explanation, when they reset the server. No notice the event was sold out or other info.
It was a total abrogation of both their process and supposed principles, but other than a vague apology they never did anything else about it. So that event can bite me - they lost me completely for wasting my time. The only people they served were the scalpers.

The scalpers are viewed by them as their customers just as the post office views their customers to be the bulk mailers.
The side doors, tunnels and strange operating systems were not just lucky whims of the scalpers.

So... like every single concert or sporting event since Ticketmaster's inception? lol
Quote: FaceSo... like every single concert or sporting event since Ticketmaster's inception? lol
The point particular to Burning Man was they made all kinds of a fuss about having a ridiculously convoluted application process for tickets before you were "allowed" to buy them. You had to plow through and agree a purity vow (including not scalping your tickets), give them a bunch of personal information on a profile with a lot of mandatory entries, read about their purpose, and take a friggin test. You had to hit application windows twice in the months before you were in the pool for ticket eligibility. And, after all that, while only allowing 2 tickets per person to an event without seating or even walls, they effed over everybody who went to the trouble of playing their exclusive little game.
Screw those full-of-themselves hypocrites.

However, I did help drive an RV from Vegas to Reno. A friend going rented one in RV and asked for my help driving it to Reno, where another burner would join and they would continue the rest of the way.
Before and after BM, Reno is full of burners, so it gave me a bit of a BM contact high. On my flight home yesterday, the Reno airport was full of images of BM art. People with BM had a big table set up to help burners with questions and the Burner Express.
Next year I plan to give going another shot. I mentioned this before, but I have a friend with a big modern luxury trailer and pick-up capable of towing it, which he said he would rent to me at a reasonable cost. I'm looking for a group of about six, including me. If anyone is interested, I'm forming a list now. No obligation, just an "I'm interested Wiz" list. Anyone care to join?
I would, but I understand it's a great week to visit San Francisco instead.Quote: WizardAnyone care to join?

I think about 80% of the population would just hate BM, and I would put you squarely in the group. Maybe the topless women would give you some satisfaction, however.
In case anyone is interested: Burning Man forecast: Dust storms, 100-degree temps and lightning all possible.
I can testify that Nevada has been running hot the last couple weeks.

I went out there. I thought it was meant as a boundary. On the other side are police vehicles. I think they are there to catch intercept people trying to sneak in without paying and maybe prevent people from straying too far away and perhaps dying from the elements.
Quote: billryanIf you drive up in a Winnebago and say there are six people inside, does anyone check for extra bodies? What's security like at the entrances? Is it mostly volunteers?
They probably have everyone exit and then do a cabin search for stowaways and contraband. Hipsters don't trust each other. Especially when it comes to getting paid.

They are very serious about stowaways. When I arrived last year in an SUV they looked carefully through all the windows. I imagine they do search RV's. I'll ask when my friend who took one there this year gets back. I have heard if they find one, they seize everybody's ticket in the vehicle and send them away.
We should hire their team at the boarder.Quote: WizardThey are very serious about stowaways. When I arrived last year in an SUV they looked carefully through all the windows. By the way, the Reno Gazette Journal tries to limit people to three free articles, via a cookie. If you hit this limit, just clear your cache. You probably should do that anyway. I had months of junk in mine.
