In this post from that thread, I stated the 4/16/16 date, summarized the locations and activities for the previous main events at WoVCons and Spring Flings and asked for volunteers (perhaps local ones) to organize the details. I got no response to that request. The next tier of decisions involves Where we should gather and What activities we should plan for this year's gathering
In the interim (while I wait for such a volunteer to show up), I am starting this poll thread to get some idea on preferences for locations and activities. The poll is set up to allow multiple votes, but I prefer that people not vote for conflicting preferences, such as "Elsewhere downtown" and "On the strip". Instead, the voting options include locations, meals, and gaming alternatives -- feel free to pick a preference in each category.
I specifically listed the 777 Brew Pub at Main Street Station, because we have had the main event there 3 of the past 5 spring gatherings, with the other two on the strip and elsewhere downtown. We have gathered three times at noon, once at 2pm, and once at 6pm, and the gaming has involved craps (multiple times), poker (once), and a mixture of games at the same establishment, depending on individual preferences.
This time, I didn't offer an option for the bigots, just a little one to let GWAE know that we are thinking about him.
Hopefully, there will be some consensus among the votes that will give guidance to whoever is lucky enough to volunteer to organize the festivities. Since we all are hoping (expecting) to have the Wizard joining us, I am looking for him to at least post any restrictions that he might have on any of these options.
What say ye? (And please discuss your preferences, such as specifically where if elsewhere downtown or on/off the strip.)
The party is at 11-2 eastern time. If we catch a plane at 5 eastern we would be to vegas by 6 local. I am seriously trying to work that out.
If you go through the trouble of making that work, my vote is 100% for making it a "supper" / later event for GWAE. I think everyone (who's attending) is fairly up in the air/open to ideas (as no one has set any restrictions/special requests) so this would be a great way to include everyone since GWAE would have a restriction.Quote: GWAEHaha that was funny. I didn't read the poll and as reading was trying to come up with a snide voodoo remark. Then I giggled.

I have this really weird desire to have us all meet up at the Bellagio water fountains and that kick off the event. For me personally, I think the nighttime shoes are literally the best free thing in Vegas. Kind of like Oceans 11, but with real gamblers and AP's =P.
I say it's weird because downtown usually makes the most sense. We can all park, get it validated, and it's cheaper gambling/less crowded usually. So it would be awkward to all meet up at the fountains and then go downtown.
p.s. I'm in the midwest. I like crashing parties...
Also GWAE if you make that work, that would be pretty epic :)
I was having a lot of trouble figuring out how the way some dealer dispensed the cards at night would be the best free thing in Vegas. Then I recognized the typo -- "shoes" should be "shows" -- and I might even agree with you.Quote: RomesFor me personally, I think the nighttime shoes are literally the best free thing in Vegas.
PS GWAE: I am planning to be there, and would have a rental car. I have one schedule conflict I'm working out this week, then I'll know for sure. If you guys decide to come, it's such a close connection, I will meet your plane, then take you back to the hotel or rental car center (your choice) after we're done. That should save you at least an hour on the Vegas end. If I get screwed up for coming, I WILL find you a substitute driver among the locals.
If there is any interest, I'm up for leading a hike earlier that day or adjacent day.
I would be up for a hike. I've actually not seen a lot of Vegas outside of the city (N.E.S.W.). If this was some kind of a mountain hiking adventure I'd love that.Quote: WizardI think the 777 Brew Pub is becoming a WoV tradition and I vote for that.
If there is any interest, I'm up for leading a hike earlier that day or adjacent day.
p.s. Whilst I won't say before or after, I will be in town on 4/16, with the others I mentioned prior. We're booked! =)
I would be more interested in poker as well. I can probably get a private table at Binion's. Perhaps a private table wouldn't be the best EV for everyone. But we could at least let them know in advance so they can have an extra dealer and possibly negotiate a smaller rake or time pay.Quote: MaxPen777 is good and the food is better than fair for Downtown. I voted poker because I have no advantage at craps.

I've never been an AP at any gambling game, so if the stakes were low enough and it was a limit game, I might be willing to lose a little for the entertainment value. However, neglecting the financial outcomes, I think I have more fun at craps.
Let me summarize the plans and voting to date:
With the Wizard's endorsement and an 8 to 1 advantage over any other location in the voting to date, we might as well go ahead and declare the 777 at Main Street Station the location for dining, trivia, BS, and other such activities for the Main Event.
With a 7 to 1 advantage in the voting, we should plan on having supper at the 777 rather than lunch. This will have the benefit of providing adequate time for PokerGrinder and possibly even GWAE to get to town. I'm thinking something like 7:00pm PDT, but we can leave the exact timing until we have a more definite list of attendees and their expected arrival times.
There is far from agreement on the preferred type of gaming, with the current voting at 4 for poker, 6 for craps, and 4 for "other". I don't really want to see the group split up and go to different establishments, but I also don't want to see anyone feeling they are coerced into playing something they don't want to. As a side note, rdw4potus has mentioned that his ladyfriend might be willing to play craps but would not play poker.
I am not sure whether it would be useful or destructive to suggest two different gaming sessions, such as meeting at Binions for poker before dinner (maybe 4:30 or 5:00?), then staying at Main Street Station (or hopping over the California if MSS is too crowded) for craps after they run us out of the 777. Any thoughts on the 2-session concept?
Eh, I'll take that bet =P.Quote: WizardofnothingYou might not be an ap iffff...... You sit at the poker table with axel
I think I originally didn't vote poker due to my exorbit amount of experience with the game and not wanting to have an advantage over members, but if others are stating they want to play, of course I'd play lol... To balance the game out a bit more one of the people I'm bringing would also play, and he's not very experienced at poker?
Who says we have to stick to one game?? We could do a 1 table poker tournament (sit-n-go) and then after go play craps?
Personally, I'd be happy to play poker, but would advise against it. Poker is player vs player. As such, I don't like to play with friends at the table, in a casino poker room. If I go with friends, we tend to sit at different tables. Home games are a different story, primarily because it's just friends, and for typically lower stakes. On the other hand, if it was a private tournament, I'd be more inclined to prefer it.
Craps, on the other hand, is more social, more conducive to conversation. And less adversarial, even if some players are on the don'ts. Of course, it can burn thru a bankroll quickly.
Based upon the fun we had at the G2E group gambling at the Pai Gow Tiles table with Mike there to prevent us from screwing up, that's what I'd suggest. Like Pai Gow Poker, Tiles tends to have a lot of pushes, with a slow pace.
I've never played tiles, and have always wanted to try it. If we had people who knew BS for it I'd certainly play along.Quote: DJTeddyBear...Based upon the fun we had at the G2E group gambling at the Pai Gow Tiles table with Mike there to prevent us from screwing up, that's what I'd suggest. Really, I hope most of us are up for a few types of gaming... This way not everyone has to do things they don't want, but at some point we'll play something everyone has wanted to play.
Are you all banned from all BJ tables?
Scared to have every player at the table ramping up with the count simultaneously?
You know, you don't have to count every session, you could just play for fun ;-)
NO sit-n-go. Cash game, at least 1-2 NL. You can sit n go after you lose your cash.Quote: RomesEh, I'll take that bet =P.Quote: WizardofnothingYou might not be an ap iffff...... You sit at the poker table with axel

Just play it like go fish and you'll be just fine.Quote: RSI prefer craps - because I can control the dice and get an advantage. Plus, I don't know how to play poker.

7 hours.
I came home early due to getting sick. The full story to come.
It's looking better and better that I'll be there. :)

Sounds like a fun idea but I am pretty sure my heart would sadly give out 10 minutes into the tour.

You're right. Could be either, depending on the situation.Quote: MidwestAPIs the boss your employer or Mrs Bear?
Actually, when I floated the idea past the wife a week ago, she said Go. I thought it might be a trap so I verified a couple days ago.
No, this was my employer who gave me the green light today.

Good to have both bases covered. The secondary confirmation with the wife is an experienced move!

Dang! I had a mental image of this being in the evening. I'd like to suggest we have around a 5:00 start time with a 6:00 dinner, so those doing the Tour de Summerlin (okay, just me) have time to complete it. However, I can be outvoted.

I think DJTB's mention of "lunchtime" was when he booked his flight, not when he expected to meet us. I haven't seen his schedule yet, but it looks as if GWAE is out, so an earlier start time might work. I still suggest we wait until an attendees list is clearer before we lock in the time.

I thought we were doing Friday night around 7pm and Saturday we hadn't decided yet?!?
Yep. That's when I booked the air. Hotel and car have already been booked - although may change.Quote: DocI think DJTB's mention of "lunchtime" was when he booked his flight, not when he expected to meet us.
Although someone (Babs?) encouraged me to fly in Friday because of potential pre-event events Friday evening, I just can't do it. I AM taking the first flight out Saturday, landing around 9:30am, and would be open to lunch, or other type of meet up before the 'official' meet up at dinner (assuming it's gonna be dinner).
If anyone is interested, I intend to go to Gambler's General Store sometime on Saturday, or Sunday morning. It's on Main Street, just over half a mile from Fremont Street, so if there are other interested people, we can walk. I've walked it in the past - alone.
The only meet-ups I've attended in the past have been the after G2E dinners. They always seem to fly by. After all, by the time we get out of G2E and gather at the restaurant, it could be 7:00. Then eat and play waitress trivia, and it could be 9:00 or even later. Do a little gambling as a group, and suddenly it's time to go to bed so we can go to G2E the next day. Not complaining, mind you, but I'm REALLY looking forward to hanging out for a much longer period, and possibly much of Sunday as well.
I go home Tuesday night, on the red-eye.
Quote: PokerGrinderI thought we were doing Friday night around 7pm and Saturday we hadn't decided yet?!?
Not exactly, but you could be correct.
This thread is focused on gathering input on what and where for the Main Event -- the "Official" WoV 2016 Spring Fling -- on Saturday 4/16/16. With a very high degree of confidence, we can expect that some subset of the group will also gather for activities on Friday evening and perhaps again on Sunday or even other times. But we need to focus first on who will make it for Saturday, when they can be available to join the group, where we want to get together, what we want to do, etc.
Based on the initial input, I summarized the voting back on page 2 and suggested that the official Saturday gathering be for dinner/supper at the 777 Brew Pub at Main Street Station. Because it appeared that some folks (such as GWAE) might make it but might arrive late on Saturday, I suggested the 7:00 p.m. time, but left the exact time open until we were more definite about who will make it and what time they can arrive. At the time, I hadn't even heard about the Wizard's 80 parsec bike ride that same day.
Things I see that we now need to work on are: (1) Finding someone to take charge of organizing this shindig, since no volunteer has yet stepped forward, (2) refining the guest list as people (such as DJTB and GWAE) find out whether they can make it or not, (3) deciding how we want to address the gaming opportunities, since the voting on that issue was not at all clear cut (In that same post on page 2, I suggested the possibility of two Saturday sessions of different games, one before dinner and one after.), and (4) nailing down the exact times that we want to gather on Saturday.
If we know who is going to be there Saturday evening and know that they will also be in town on Friday, I think we can work out plans for the preliminary event fairly easily. I don't really see any rush for that.
Quote: PokerGrinderHaha I had forgotten about the Gambler's general store, I haven't been there in a couple years. Neat store, could be convinced to go.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, which I often am, but I thought that place got sold and the contents moved to some new store on Tropicana.

I just checked and it seems like they are still in the same spot.
If so, it was recently. I was there in November and the website still shows the Main Street address.Quote: WizardSomebody correct me if I'm wrong, which I often am, but I thought that [Gambler's General Store] got sold and the contents moved to some new store on Tropicana.
However, there is evidence to support the theory that they were sold:
1. My favorite clerk is gone.
2. They built a fence along the edge of the parking lot facing Spinetti's. So it is no longer simple to park at one place and visit both.
3. They rearranged their floor space so that the back part is now a small coffee shop.
