I can see triple zero roulette....

Mexican lotto, called "Melate" (loose translation is "I've a hunch") started out witht he jackpot being 6 out of 39 numbers. Over the years more numbers were added. Now it's 56 numbers, and you still need to hit 6 for the jackpot. Meaning the bet's grown much worse over time.

Well, the agency in charge (Pronosticos Deportivos, for Paco's infomration) just released a new game called "Melate Retro," which goes back to 39 numbers (again 6 are needed for the jackpot).

When I commented to some coworkers, they thought it was unfair to "take away so many numbers."

I can see triple zero roulette coming any time.

BTW I told my dad about it and he said "Oh, that's a better bet." Which may just explain where I got my gambling sense from.

With the Retro version, your chances of winning anything go way up, but the chances of somebody getting all 6 numbers go up too. As a result, the top prize will never get to the levels of the 56 number game.

And, although expressed badly, THAT might be what your coworkers were upset about. Then again, I suspect not.

I have no idea why double zero is more popular than single zero roulette. But if triple zero is introduced, there will be millions of simultaneous light bulbs going on in people's heads, and single zero will start gaining popularity.

It has a lower guaranteed jackpot and, since fewer people play it, it will grow slower while it hits. Oh, and it costs half of what the regular lotto costs, so that lowers prizes, too. But it's the best bad bet for lotto.

Your suspicion is correct. They seem to think having more numbers to choose from is better. They also believe it matters who checks the results (after the resutls are set, mind you, when nothing can affect them, however irrationally). Not to mention they belive if I say "our chances of winning are infinitesimal," that's the reason we dind't hit the jackpot :)

I'm pondering a new game: EZ Lotto.

Here's how it works: you pay me 25 cents, and that's it. You get the full lotto experience:: 1) you throw money away, 2) you don't win anything. In exchange you don't have to check results or even worry about losing your ticket (there are no tickets).

Who knows, maybe if I offer two million numbers.... :P

I suppose double zero is more popular with the casinos. notice the single zero is usually found at high limit areas, where bulk betting (high bets) makes up for a lower HA. A casual gambler with a minimum of sense knows this, but maybe figures double zero is better than nothing.

The rest may not know any better, and there are those who think two is better than one <sigh>

National lotteries (and state lotteries in the USA) are all legalized robbery. I doubt that Mexico is worse than any other country.

If I remember correctly, there was once a time where a three zero wheel was around in the United States. It had a 0, a double 00 and an american eagle as the third zero.

Someone more computer savy then I can look this up to confirm.

Because that doesn't divide well with all the different combinations.

That's what my church did when they were raising funds to redo their gymnasium. They removed #1 and #2 and put a big line through the middle of the board that read "charity stripe." I thought that was pretty clever, since they were remodeling a basketball court...anyway...every number paid 33:1, 0 and 00 were available (also at 33:1), and any "charity stripe" hit was a win for the house.

They also had 3 card poker with a dealer's king was needed to qualify, and Blackjack where players were forced into insurance (but, oddly, not even-money blackjacks) and the rules were pretty stingy.

6/39 Originally there were six merchants elected to the city counsel (Prior to the Italian unification) and there were 39 merchants eligible to run for the vacancies. This lead to betting and to the early realization that you didn't actually need an election to determine the winner. This is why lottery tickets were originally NAMES not NUMBERS.

000 Beware that one. When it came up in the NY Policy game, a guy by the name of Arthur Flegenheimer died. You may know him better as Dutch Schultz. He was German. His nickname came from his habit of taking over a book by Dutching a horse race.

I think double zero roulette is popular simply because there are so many knowlegable players who understand the relationship between the numbers and the layout. For example, if I split 17/20 on a double zero wheel, I know that they are just one number apart. If I bet 0/00/1/2 I know that I will get thrill if the ball starts to settle anywhere close to either of the zeros. Not being able to relate the numbers on the layout to the wheel position is a negative for the single zero game.

As far as three zeros go, there was a system a while back that had the following logic:

1) Without any zeros, Roulette is an even game. Best in the house.
2) The trick is to eliminate the zeros, and then play the even game.
3) This is done via a progression on the zero(s) that is considered separate from your other bets.
4) The double zero wheel is better suited for the system because the progression matures twice as fast!

By this logic, the triple zero wheel would put you in Roulette Heaven. Your zero(s) progression would now mature in record speed.

No casino has ever lost money by over-estimating the intelligence of Roulette players (well...almost no casinos :))

At the time they used punch cards to enter the tickets into the system. So when they started doing lotto, their system was set for punch cards with 39 possible perforations. Therefore the original lotto had 39 numbers.

When they switched to optical blanks read by machines at the sale site, they had a lot more latitude to tinker with the system, to introduce more games, and to place more variations on the games. The deadline to buy tickets was extended, too.
