This level of casual familiarity can lead to the old "Dutch uncle" routine, or "tough love," which we now know to be perilous indeed.

Then he asked: "For those who have read this appeal and still won't donate, the question for the forum is why not?"
Larry S. posted, in response to the above question: "I believe your statement that you make bad business decisions.
you are like the guy that sets his house on fire and then complains that its to expensive to pay for all the water damage after the fire dept leaves."
Question asked.
Question answered.
Sure, Larry was pushing it, but an argument can be made that the only insult was the bluntness he employed in answering the original question.

I'm not going to argue your observation, but I see the situation a bit differently, I think.
First and foremost, to me anyway, is the incredible resource that is the set of websites Mike operates. He has provided huge value for free, and while much of the content comes from voluntary participation, many of the articles, simulations, editing, and even the underlying software running the websites themselves have been paid for by Mike himself. The level of generosity that demonstrates is almost unmatched by individuals on the net; to me, it's on the scale of MIT providing free audit classes, which I think is ultimately paid for by federal grants, so Mike tops even them in making this a privately-funded enterprise. And his motive, as I understand it, is primarily altruistic, in attempting to level the playing field between casinos and players through the open exchange of strategies and a true understanding of relative risk.
So, Mike is your host, and you are in his house when you participate here. Everyone is free to use the resources without payment, without acknowledgement, without any need to comment. If you DO choose to take it a step up and communicate with other people (who would not be here without Mike hosting the forum), there is some respect due him. Just like attending a cocktail party in his living room, especially if you hope to have a business footing with those you speak to (and I'm including recreational gamblers and those only indirectly related to the gaming business) in the room. So if you choose to publicly be "blunt" and negative to your host, in front of all his other guests, you certainly run the risk of being asked to leave. It's no different here.
It's possible that, had Larry kept his statements to PM with Mike, he would not have been banned, because it's very evident Mike has a great distaste for having to ask for help, and has avoided doing so as long as possible. I don't know that to be true, but much of the "insult" aspect of what he said lies in how third parties would view it. It contributed nothing to Mike's effort to sustain the website, there was nothing constructive about it, and MIKE paid for him to say it, not Larry. So, Mike is the one with rights in this situation, not Larry; he is a guest, as are all of us. If this WERE a paid site, perhaps he would have rights of some kind, if only the right to stop paying and participating.

I actually think that the Wizard showed a lot of restraint. He didn't even get martingaled, and it was only a couple of days after his last 30-day suspension.

If I've got your question correctly, the translation is: Just My Humble Opinion; Your Mileage May Vary. Kind of a standard disclaimer on internet boards allowing that there may be more than one way of looking at it. Slang on "your mileage may vary" - origin from car manufacturers required to label their gas consumption, now means we expect there to be different results on any statement based on opinion, as mine was.
Sorry for my taking a laugh at the American habit of using TLA's (three-letter acronyms). Your example FLA is one of inflation, I guess.

I really didn't understand why the Ferris Bueller reference got in the thread, but it is a lot more amusing than everyone challenging whatever ace writes now.
I am am willing to meet and personally exchange points of view. Especially since I will not be here for the next 30 days probaly.

Why was this mitigated?
Due to his editing his post after it was already reported and flagged? HE is not sorry he did it, he is sorry he got caught - that should not be a mitigating factor, IMHO.

Surely this is nuke-worthy

This is not a black-and-white process. This was a first offense after participating over a year here. There have been hundreds, if not more, instances of editing by authors who re-thought rash posts and were allowed to move on without consequences. What he edited down to, if it had been said in the first place, would not have crossed the grey line into a suspension, though it was close. Ace was genuinely insulted. The original was retained in a couple places. So it wasn't going to be ignored altogether. This seems appropriate in this case to me; I can be overruled, and if either party wants to make an appeal, they are welcome to do it.

BBB I am not going to appeal as I respect your Admin. status…I am merely voicing my opinion.
As Mission once opined about suspensions…if you are making an analogy to something else to demonstrate how a person is acting (in your opinion), then a suspension is not warranted.
I am adding the "if you edit it quickly enough, suspensions shall be mitigated" to my handy-dandy list of what I can and cannot do.
In contrast, a website I used to help admin had commercial software that allowed reception via email or daily digest. It captured and sent unedited posts immediately. It was a huge problem in a few cases, like when the unedited version of something written in haste got quoted on the floor of the US House. Oops. I think I prefer our mode of operation.

Well, the profanity thing is in the rules, but the request from the Wizard is to mask it on the serious swearwords. Paraphrasing a much longer thread on it, my guidelines are, hell, damned, pissed, geez, other substitutes no big deal, bull sh**, sh&%, f***, BS, b***h, bas***, etc. (when not used as direct insults) are not actionable in and of themselves and do convey your meaning quite clearly. So, with that said, could you please go back and edit? LMAO....
I tried to hire a lawyer I have great respect for aside from his gambling career, to appeal my suspension ! But I understood when Aceofspades said he had a conflict of interest.
Now I feel like John Gotti must have when the Feds denied him his right to proper legal counsel aka Bruce Cutler. A worse miscarriage of justice than the sweetheart plea Sammy the RAT got !

Excellent, now we're getting somewhere.
Can you please post a link to the board's rules of Appellate Procedure?
Can Amicus briefs be submitted by non-parties?
Are sanctions imposed if the appeal is lost?
Who is the final arbiter? let me guess"What, me worry?"
Quote: aceofspadesWell, I suppose WoV has now turned into the anti-AoS forums...
I don't think that has happened at all. I'm going to speak honestly to you. You knew long before the Aria last month that there were a lot of people who didn't think much of SC. People sounded off on both sides and the conversation went seriously downhill. Now you're carrying a huge chip on your shoulder about that thread, evidenced by the title and comments you made in the latest AC TR thread. But I think people like and value you here quite a bit, they just disagree with your choices on BJ, and there's sort of an intervention cut short, tried because they like you, cut short by how personally you took it all.
So people are going to take a step back from the discussion, and I would advise you do the same, and assume positive intent on the part of those who were trying to change your play, instead of taking it all personally and negatively. Easy to say, hard to do, and a battle I have to constantly fight myself.
As I said before, Love ya. Mean it. Slightly envious of you being a black-chip player, as I've never been able to afford that level of play, with the better rules and the better comps. Wish the best for you, and I enjoy your TR's.
(slightly edited for clarification)
