Good maps. Change the name of Fitzgeralds, and I think you've got it.

From one that has 10 thumbs, except when I deal craps, 10 Thumbs Up!
I am sure it was planned.Quote: AcesAndEightsAh geez, you guys left off O'Sheas! Clearly the finest gambling establishment on the strip...
In a few months that casino will no longer exist thanks to Project Linq.
If DJTB adds it before the wrecking ball takes it down, his map with O'Sheas should become a collectors item.
Quote: 7crapsYes, Great job DJTB!
Agree. That took some work. Remarkable!
I think Paco's $72mil benchmark is too limiting. He lists only 38 casinos, and that's from all of Nevada. My Strip map alone shows 40 casinos, and people are already moaning about one that's missing.
Sorry, but O'Shea's didn't make the cut. I interestingly enough, nobody mentioned that Slots-O-Fun is missing. And I'd think it would be the reverse, since O'Shea's recently announced that it's closing, there's no room to jam it's logo in there, and there's plenty of room for the Slots-O-Fun logo.
The reality is, neither of these have a hotel. I was using the WoV Hotel List as my guide. Anthing listed, that also has table games, was included. That's why both are missing.
Ellis Island isn't listed either, but I added it because I know it has a hotel attached - albeit, under a different name, and possibly different ownership. Mike didn't object, so it stayed.
I wanted to put Joker's Wild on the Valley map, but Mike nixed that idea.
I know a revision is already needed for the Fitz name change. That'll happen once I get a logo for "the D".
For the record, I got most of the logos from a screen shot of each casino's website, then cleaned up to remove the most of the background. Hardest of all was to find logos for the three closed casinos. They're included because they are iconic and still standing.
It's not on the WoV Hotel list. And besides, didn't the casino there close?Quote: thlfYou missed Montelago Village out at Lake Las Vegas.
Quote: DJTeddyBearIt's not on the WoV Hotel list. And besides, didn't the casino there close?
It closed several years ago and re opened about 1 year ago.
About Lake Las Vegas, although what was formerly the Hyatt, now the Ravella, has reopened, I think neither that nor Lowes has a casino. At one time both of them did.
The map used to have pretty much everything on my casino list but I asked Dave to include only the places that had both a casino with table games AND a hotel. So that will exclude both Lake Las Vegas properties.
Quote: AcesAndEightsFor the record, I was mostly joking about O'Sheas. Especially since it's closing this month, I see no need to include it.
Nostalgia?
Granted it would have been cramped and looked awful. But I noticed some extinct properties illustrated, albeit with an "X" over them. Hmm. Come to think of it, a logo, and the x-out and all thsoe casinos already crowding the center Strip... Not even nostalgia justifies that.
BTW, I assume the extinct properties, such as Sahara, are listed because while they're closed they're alos still standing. That seems like a sound criteria. And in some cases there's talk of bringing them back from the debt, I mean the dead.
were there in 1980 and what replaced them. I've been
going since 1975 and damned if I can remember what
was where. In contrast, Downtown hasn't changed at all.
You could should show the logo of the 1980 casino
and in parenthesis show what replaced it. People love
maps like that, at least I do.
Quote: WizardAbout Lake Las Vegas, although what was formerly the Hyatt, now the Ravella, has reopened, I think neither that nor Lowes has a casino. At one time both of them did.
Maybe my memory isn't completely clear, but I think that Lowes was originally a Hyatt, and that is were I picked up my Hyatt Regency Casino chip in March 2006, just days before the casino closed and the hotel was sold. Lowes converted the casino area into a ballroom or show room for conventions. Was Ravella also a Hyatt?
According to this web site, the Casino Monte Lago is again open at the Ravella, with slots and "electronic table games." That probably doesn't meet your criteria.
Quote: DocMaybe my memory isn't completely clear, but I think that Lowes was originally a Hyatt,..
You could easily be right about that.

Slots only don't count. It must have at least one table game with a live dealer. Those units with a dealer on a video screen do not count.

On the other hand, I DO plan on attempting to find higher resolution logos for a lot of the casinos. But that's much more of a back-burner type of project.
Quote: DJTeddyBearExcuse me? Downtown sure has changed, just not on the same scale as the Strip.
I meant the major hotels that were there in 1980
are still there on Fremont.
I would suggest to introduce a little more proportion into the map,
particularly the strip one.
Such as enlarge "Palazzo+ Venetian" so that they occupy more space than
Bills or Casino Royal
Quote: WizardI'm inclined to let it stay, but am not sure what I'll say if somebody writes to me suggesting I remove it.
Look up how to say in latin "my maps, my rules, my exceptions" :) I know "my" is "mea."

Tell 'em the truth: You and your artist discussed it, as well as Joker's wild. The artist wanted both, you wanted neither, and you compromised.Quote: Wizard... I' inclined to let Ellis Island stay, but am not sure what I'll say if somebody writes to me suggesting I remove it.
For the record, I added Ellis Island in the first draft, and DID ask if it should really be there. But in the same email, I asked about Joker's wild. This, despite the fact that the first draft of the Strip map was ready TWO WEEKS before the first draft of the Valley map.
And I DID have Joker's Wild in the first draft Valley map, but I'm a "choose your battles" kind of guy, so when Mike asked for it to be removed, I did so, and kept my crying to this little corner of the virtual universe....
I didn't see it.
Edit: Sorry, I see it now.
(Seriously, the non-strip/downtown map listed a few that were not "on my radar", and it turns out (I think) all but two of them are on a bus line somewhere. Now, to figure out a way to get to Green Valley, Red Rock, Rampart, Aliante, Cannery, M (one of the ones the buses don't reach), and Railroad Pass in 3 days...)
If your plans are to stay confined to the strip and downtown, with maybe one diversion, then, sure, go by bus.
But car rentals are cheap enough. The key advice for a tourist driving in Vegas is to NOT drive on the Strip. Too many distractions. Plus, it's usually got too much traffic anyway.
Do what I did: Pre-program your GPS with the BACK entrance to the big casinos. Bring the GPS with you. And rent a car.
Also, although the downtown map is nearly complete, there are many streets missing from the Strip map. Check a street map or GPS before attempting to navigate.
I give up. Where is it?Quote: buzzpaffI have enlarged every area of that map. Where the hell is the EMERALD PALACE ? ? ?
For the record, Emerald Island is in Henderson. But as I searched their website, I found no evidence of a hotel or table games - the two criteria needed to qualify for inclusion. Also, their website doesn't even provide an address or cross street. It just says that they're in "Downtown Henderson."
So I don't know where Emerald Island is either!

Pardon me, Teddy. Just follow the yellow brick road.
Quote: DJTeddyBearI give up. Where is it?For the record, Emerald Island is in Henderson.
Its 100% penny slots and no table gaames or hotel.
Not only that, but because they are iconic, and in an otherwise empty part of the map.Quote: NareedBTW, I assume the extinct properties, such as Sahara, are listed because while they're closed they're alos still standing. That seems like a sound criteria.
O'Shea's got cut, not because they are closing, but because they don't have a hotel.
Well, it went from the back burner to the front burner rather quickly.Quote: DJTeddyBearI DO plan on attempting to find higher resolution logos for a lot of the casinos. But that's much more of a back-burner type of project.
New maps, with better looking / high-res logos, were uploaded yesterday.
For the record, when the Wiz made a comment about Aria's name in the Chip of the Day thread, it prompted me to look it up on Wikipedia. While there, I discovered that the Aria page has a nice looking logo. But more than that, when I clicked on the logo, I got to a page ABOUT the logo, which included the option to download several resolutions.
As a result, I checked for a Wikipedia page for every casino. About 85% had logos on the page, with almost all of them offering multiple high-res versions.
I also took this opportunity to change the color of the highways so it's the same in all 3 maps, as well as to add a gauge for the scale of each map.
The Strat's logo isn't even recognized as a tower... only the top of the tower.
McCarren??? Its AIRPORT.
"Washed out pastel" ? Are you looking at the enlarged maps? (Although, quite frankly, I disagree even with the small versions.)
Strat logo: Funny you should mention that one. I actually did an extra search to find it, rather than use their current logo:
McCarran: That was my decision for a variety of reasons: It's definitely an important point of reference for tourists, and it's in an otherwise big empty area. "Big empty area" also applies to UNLV and Fashion Show which I did not think to include until Mike mentioned them.
Quote: DJTeddyBearI think Paco's $72mil benchmark is too limiting. He lists only 38 casinos, and that's from all of Nevada. My Strip map alone shows 40 casinos, and people are already moaning about one that's missing.
I didn't mean the list of over $72 million to be exclusive. At a minimum you should have these casinos.
The full list for the strip is 41 licenses that the Nevada Gaming Commission considers to be Vegas Strip licenses (over $1 million) is below. Only 22 of these licenses make over $72 million: See Fiscal Year 2011, Vegas Strip begins pg. 71
Mardi Gras, Clarion and that little place on Flamingo that won't lose their license for decades are not on the list because they didn't make over $1 million.
The list includes the Airport Concession, and the Palms and Cosmopolitan Sports Book because they operate under a separate license from the casino.
The fiscal year 2011 goes from 30 June 2010 - 1 July 2011 so it includes casinos operating at any point during this time (like Sahara).

Do all of the downtown properties have hotels? As someone else mentioned, Binion's is listed but I don't think they have a hotel. I'm not suggesting that Binion's should be removed - it meets the iconic requirement - just that it's also an exception.
Wild West has table games and is a part of the Days Inn on Polaris and Tropicana, near the Orleans. I think it's slightly too far west to fit on the strip blowup, but it's also not on the valley map.

Ellis Island was added at my own suggestion. One reason is, prior to my second Vegas trip, my mother, who had only been to Vegas once, suggested I stop there. I have since seen that it has that attached hotel, and figured that it probably qualifies. The Wiz didn't object.Quote: rdw4potusEllis Island and the Super 8 share a covered walkway, but they're not quite physically connected.

On the flip side, I wanted to include Joker's Wild on the Valley map, but the Wiz nixed that one.
Binions closed their hotel? I COMPLETELY forgot that point, but agree that it's iconic and deserves to stay.
As I mentioned previously, I used the WoV Hotel list as a starting point, including only those hotels that have table games.
It was not entirely my decision to put the Stratosphere on the Strip map, although I would have even without prompting. It had been on the Wiz' prior Strip maps, and for good reason. Ask any tourist, and they'll say it's on the Strip. Only those "in the know" realize that it's the only strip casino that's actually in Las Vegas.
Once the decision to include the Strat was made, the East-West boundries of my map area become obvious. As a result, Palace Station, Orleans and Terribles are included on hte Strip map only because the lie within the rectangle I had drawn. They would have been on the Valley map if the Strip map rectangle was narrower.
Wild West was excluded because it's not on the WoV Hotel list, and, unlike Ellis Island, I have no knowledge of it, and the Wiz didn't suggest it. Please keep in mind that I'm not from Vegas. I've spent a total of about 29 days in Clark County, and rented a car only once - for less than 48 hours.
(Wiz, ya reading this? Should I add Wild West? Any others?)
It was the Wiz that suggested I add Fashion Show, which I momentarily objected to, until I realized that it's iconic, a tourist destination, on the Strip, and, most important, in an otherwise empty space on the map. The Wiz also suggested I add UNLV, which prompted me to also add the convention center and monorail route.
Quote: DJTeddyBear(Wiz, ya reading this? Should I add Wild West? Any others?)
Nah, leave it alone.
Quote: DJTeddyBearBinions closed their hotel? I COMPLETELY forgot that point, but agree that it's iconic and deserves to stay.
The hotel is clsoed, but the casino is still operating as far as I know (does anyone know if it shares a player card with 4 Queens? BTW)
But you'll have to make a few changes soon. The Fitz will be renamed The D, and I understand the Lady Luck will re-open as the Downtown Grand sometime this millenium.
