About 500 employees are expected to be relocated to Malta from Gibraltar in the coming months after gambling giant Bet365 decided to move its hub here because of Brexit, Times of Malta is informed.

Bet365, one of the world’s leading online gambling groups, announced last month it would be moving to Malta, citing “the mitigation of the impact of Brexit” as the main reason. The Sunday Times of Malta had reported on the planned move a year ago.

The company also announced a “rationalisation” of its staff at its Gibraltar office “as the sports betting giant continues to move its operations to Malta”.

This bill:

(1) Authorizes sports betting in Memphis, Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Nashville if the city approves sports betting by an election on the question;
(2) Establishes the Tennessee sports wagering commission to regulate sports betting;
(3) Imposes a tax on sports wagering; and
(4) Establishes requirements applicable to sports wagering.

TAX ON GROSS SPORTS WAGERING REVENUE

This bill imposes a 10 percent privilege tax on an operator's gross sports wagering revenue. In addition to the privilege tax, a municipality may levy a privilege tax of up to 2 percent on the gross sports wagering revenue generated from wagers placed at a physical sports book located within the municipality's corporate boundaries.

Tax revenue collected pursuant to this bill will be earmarked and allocated specifically for pre-K-12 grade education and deposited in the education trust fund.'

First, the state will tax 10% of the gross revenue from the sportsbook, which means that the odds available to the sports bettor will be terrible and not competitive with off-shore sports books.

Second, sports betting is allowed for persons living within the corporate city limits of 4 cities, and only if those cities have passed an election measure on the question. So it is not immediately available and will not be available for at least six months and probably longer (a couple of years). And it applies only to about 1/2 of the population of the state.
