10. Why Indiana Sports Betting Grew in December While Iowa Flattened Out

During this time of year, sports fans have their eyes set on 2 February for Super Bowl Sunday. While that is one of the biggest sporting events of the year, it is not the only highlight of the year for gamblers. Here, we take a look at 10 events that bettors should have circled on their 2020 calendar.

10. ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup
The seventh International Cricket Council Men’s Twenty20 tournament will take place from 18 October to 15 November, where the final will be held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia.

It is a 16-team tournament that sees the top eight ranked teams qualify for the Super 12s. The final four spots in the Super 12s will be determined in group play.

The last tournament took place in 2016, when the West Indies defeated England in the finals.

According to the bet365 Sportsbook & Racebook, Australia is the favorite to win this year’s tournament at 11-to-4 odds, followed by India at 7-to-2 odds.

9. NBA Finals
On 4 June, Game 1 of the NBA Finals will begin and a champion will be decided no later than 21 June. Last year, the Toronto Raptors took home the crown behind Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard. However, Leonard has moved his skill to the Los Angeles Clippers and determining a clear winning team is much more difficult this season.

Intertops Sportsbook has three teams tied as the favorite with 3-to-1 odds, the Milwaukee Bucks, the Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers. The defending champion Raptors are at 28-to-1 currently.

The Milwaukee Bucks have the best record in the NBA with a 40-6 mark. It is tough to not want to pick a team with only six losses so far this season, but there are several capable teams that can make a deep run in this year’s playoffs.

8. Summer Olympics
Beginning on 24 July, the world will get to experience just over two weeks of Olympic events through 9 August.

Tokyo, Japan will be home to the Summer Olympics for the second time, the first being in 1964.

There will be 50 different disciplines of 33 sports taking place at this year’s events, including basketball, aquatics, gymnastics, equestrian and much more.

There are 142 Olympics Committees that qualified to participate in the 2020 Summer Olympics. In 2016, the U.S. took home the honor of the most medals won with 121, followed by Great Britain with 67.

7. Wimbledon
A month before the Olympics begin, the tennis world will be occupied by the biggest tournament in the sport.

Wimbledon begins on 29 June. The women’s final will take place on 11 July and the men’s final will be the following day.

Novak Djokovic, the favorite to win the 2020 men’s tournament at +150, is the defending champion. The women’s returning winner is Simona Halep who has the second best odds at +750 behind Serena Williams at +600, according to Intertops Sportsbook.

This Grand Slam event has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London since 1877.

6. Melbourne Cup
If you don’t know much about horse racing you may think the Triple Crown races are the only focus in the racing world. However, The Melbourne Cup in Australia on 3 November should be on any bettor’s radar.

The first Tuesday of November is always when the 3,200-meter race is held on. It is for thoroughbreds three-years-old or older and is located at the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne. The race has been run since 1861 with the fastest ever time coming in 1990 by Kingston Rule with a final time of 3:16.3.

Cross Counter was the champion of last year’s race and $8 million prize. No horse has won the Melbourne Cup more than three times, only Makybe Diva has taken home the crown three times in the mid-2000s.

5. Kentucky Derby
As previously mentioned, the Triple Crown races are always the talk of horse racing in the U.S. The Kentucky Derby is coming off of a controversial finish last year after a penalty was given to change the outcome of the race and determining an incredible longshot winner. Country House was around 30-to-1 odds the morning of the race last year, before winning what will be a race that goes down in history.

This year on 2 May, fans will hopefully have a more clear-cut finish and winner compared to last year. The race is held annually in Louisville, Kentucky.

The last two races have been held in sloppy conditions due to weather, but hopefully the second day of May will have a better forecast for a cleaner race.

Nineteen horses made it to the gates last year with one being disqualified for illegal contact. It is tough to predict this far out who the favorite should be, considering horses can be scratched from the list just moments before post-time. However, keep 2 May on your schedule of major gambling events.

4. European Football Championship
For one month starting on 12 June, 12 countries will host matches as part of the 24-team UEFA tournament.

There have already been 20 teams to qualify, with the four remaining spots to be filled in March in the playoff round.

The 2016 finals went into extra time, where Portugal came out victorious over host-country France.
This year, England is the favorite to win it all on bet365 at 4-to-1 odds with Belgium right behind them at 5-to-1.

Portugal is listed at 16-to-1 and the country has already qualified. Portugal will look to become the second country ever to win the European Championship back-to-back. The only team to do it was Spain in 2008 and 2012.

3. World Series of Poker
The 51st edition of the World Series of Poker begins on 26 May and will run through 15 July. The Rio-All Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas will be the venue for the 51-day poker tournament, including the Main Event that will begin on 5 July.

The Main Event winner of 2019 was Hossein Ensan and he took home $10 million along with the most coveted poker title.
The 2020 tournament will aim to beat the record-breaking 2019 edition. A record $293,183,345 in prize money was created from the 187,298 entries, the highest ever in the WSOP.

2. March Madness
Here in New England, March is already crazy enough with the weather. Will it be snowing or will it be 75 degrees and sunny? Nobody knows. However, to add to the chaos, college basketball unloads constant games to sports fanatics.

Selection Sunday will be on 15 March, where all teams, including the play-in games are announced.
On 17 and 18 March, the play-in games will take place, then the madness truly begins. Arguably the wildest two days in sports will be on 19 and 20 March. Both days will have 16 games played starting in the early afternoon and running near midnight. There is constant basketball running on screens and at times there will be four games playing at once.

The University of Virginia, the 2019 winner, is not as powerful as they were last year. So far with a 13-6 record, the Cavaliers sit in fifth place in the Atlantic Coast Conference and currently have 33-to-1 odds on bet365.

The current favorite is Gonzaga at 10-to-1 trailed by Kansas and Louisville at 11-to-1. The 2020 Final Four will be held in Atlanta, Georgia on 6 April.

1. Super Bowl LIV
This coming Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers will square off against the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV.

The game will kick-off at 6:30 p.m. EST at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida.

December Put an Exclamation Point on 2019

For the gaming industry, December is always one of the most important months. For some operators, the critical week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve can make or break an entire year. The revenue from that week is not reported separately, but whenever a state reports a drastic downturn in December, that week is the first place to look. There is nothing worse for casino operators in heavy weather states than getting a major snowstorm over the New Year holidays.

It seems that in December 2019 the sun was shining on the tables, slots, and sports books across much of the country. Not surprisingly, given the good results, other statistics were also quite positive. According to INRIX, 115.6 million people traveled during the final week in December. The shopping in the period leading up to holiday week hit record levels; on Super Saturday alone consumers spent $34.4 billion. Unemployment rates, jobs, average income, consumer confidence, housing sales, and other economic measurements were positive. The stock market ended the year on a uptrend, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average up 1.7 percent in December to 28,538.44; for the year, the Dow was up 21.78 percent. It was a very good year for the national economy and for the gaming industry.

For gaming, December put a nice exclamation mark on year’s results. Although, there was one less Friday in 2019 than in 2018, December revenue was up 4.4 percent over 2018, to $3.871 billion. December capped another full year of expansion and growth, with national gaming revenue up 4.3 percent to $44.9 billion across the 12 months. Of course, no gaming narrative is complete these days without mentioning sports betting. The American Gaming Association (AGA) released a report saying the total legal wagering in 2019 was $13 billion, double that of 2018. The sports win for December was $109.7 million in the ten states that reported sports betting. Expansion legislation and the opening of new resorts will always be important elements in gaming, but the numbers from sports betting, especially in states with mobile wagering, are stealing the spotlight from everything else.

December 2019

Atlantic City had a combined casino, sports, and online gaming win of $287.9 million in December, an increase of 11.0 percent over 2018. The casino win was $208.6 million, down 0.2 percent; sports win was $39.4 million, up 41.1 percent; and internet gaming win was $49.3 million, up 70.0 percent. Slot win was $150.0 million, up 2.4 percent; and table game win was $58.5 million, down 6.4 percent. For the year, total gaming win in New Jersey was $3.4 billion, up 19.5 percent; casino win was $2.6 billion, up 7.0 percent; sports win was $299.4 million; and internet win was $482.7 million, up 61.6 percent. For all of 2019, Atlantic City ranked 2nd nationally, with a 7.5 percent share of national revenue.

In December, as always, Borgata led the market in Atlantic City, reporting revenue of $66.4 million, up 6.1.5 percent. Combining Resorts and Resorts Digital puts that company in second place with $33.1 million, with Golden Nugget third with $31.7 million, up 18.6 percent. Hard Rock and Tropicana tied for fourth with $27.7 million in win. For Hard Rock, that was an increase 11.3 percent from 2018; for Tropicana, that was a decrease of 6.2 percent. For online win, Golden Nugget led with $17.2 million, up 69.9 percent, with Resorts Digital next with $11.9 million, up 174.4 percent. But if sports win for Resorts Digital, $9.3 million, up 39.5 percent, is combined with online win, then Resorts is the leader with $21.2 million in revenues.


Nevada in December reported a 5.7 percent increase to $1.057 billion. Table game revenue was off 1.7 percent to $357.4 million, with the traditional nemesis, baccarat down 26.0 percent to $76.1 million. Statewide, slots were up 10.1 percent to $700.1 million, and sports betting was off 17.6 percent to $36.3 million. By market, in December, the Las Vegas Strip was up 4.5 percent to $591.8 million; Downtown Las Vegas reported $63.2 million, up 6.8 percent; Laughlin had $33.0 million, up 1.1 percent; and Boulder Strip had $82.0 million, up 20.5 percent. In the north, Reno was down 2.7 percent to $52.4 million; Sparks was up 2.0 percent to $11.5 million; North Lake Tahoe had $2.1 million, down 7.1 percent; South Lake Tahoe rose 8.1 percent to $18.1 million; Elko Country increased 5.5 percent to $26.0 million; and the Carson Valley casinos were off 1.9 percent to $9.3 million.

For the year, total gaming revenue in Nevada was $12.027 billion, the third highest on record, and 0.96 percent higher than 2018. Table game revenue was off 2.5 percent to $4.1 billion; slots were $7.9 billion, up 2.8 percent; and sports were up 9.5 percent to $329.1 million on a handle of $5.3 billion. The Silver State ranked number 1 with a 26.8 market share, down from 28.1 percent in 2018.

Overall, 2019 was a good year. Encore Boston Harbor opened, construction of new resorts is underway on the Strip in Las Vegas, VLTs are still sprouting up like weeds in Illinois, and Pennsylvania as well as Illinois is entering into another period of major growth. Still, sports betting, which is expanding at warp speed, is the story of 2019. At year-end, there were fourteen states with legal sports betting. Six more authorized sports betting in 2019 and will begin taking wagers in 2020. At least six more states will take the plunge by the end of 2020. Sports wagering, combined with online gaming, has saved the industry in Atlantic City, and these two are beginning to be as important in Pennsylvania. As 2019 ended, sports betting was clearly the most important new trend the industry has seen in a very long time.
