I'm intending this as a general thread, but I do have a specific example for the trip I'm taking soon to use as an example.

What would you play and why? Bankroll is $2000. I don't know what the progressives are at until I get there, of course will use Wiz's calculator to see if they're above 100%. Some of these are multiplay and I didn't mention it, but I doubt that will really be a major factor one way or another. I've got the best android trainer out there right now for any of these, and I would train myself to 98% or so accuracy. The 2% being deviation from proper strategy for stabs at royals(say there's a high pair on the board but also 3 to the royal, I'd choose royal.)

These aren't in order of payback, I took them from vp2free's casino reports for the upcoming trip I'm going on, so when it goes from higher payback to lower back to higher that's a new casino location to take into consideration.

98.01% Bonus Poker $1 or $2
98.91% Deuces Wild - Illinois/Airport Deuces Multiple denoms $1, $2, $5, $100
98.45% Jacks or Better Multi Denom $1, $2, $5, $10
99.11% Double Bonus $1 (3/5/10 play)
99.08% Pickem Poker Double Double Bonus $1
98.98% Double Double Bonus $1
97.30% Jacks or Better progressive .25, $1
96.79% DDB progressive .25
99.54% JoB $5
99.52% JoB $25
98.98 DDB .50 and $5
98.91% Deuces Wild .50
98.15% Triple Doube Bonus $5, $10, $20
99.54% Jacks or Better .25,.50, $1

I'd plan on losing 40 cents a hand at the dollar X 5 level unless some high hands show up, and why would they? $2,000/$0.40 = 5,000 hands; 10K hands at 50 cents X 5 bet per hand; 20K hands at 25 cents X 5 bet per hand (10 cents per hand lost).
I like Double Double Bonus because there's more chances for a higher payout, but you just get ripped off on the 2 pair payouts.
Anytime there's a hand pay, that's a problem for me, but other gamblers may have compensated for it somehow. So I'd stick to 25 cent machines with top prizes under $1,200.

I would play the highest paying game that I enjoy at the levels I am comfortable at. I like multi-play but am also comfortable with $2 or $5 denomination single line as long as the game is lower volatility (NSUD, Bonus, or Jacks). I am getting more and more proficient in Deuces type games so in this first group, I would pick Airport Deuces. I would not play 9/7 DB because I am not comfortable at that strategy and it has unusual holds that I would probably botch.

I don't really find progressives worth chasing unless they meet the criteria of being at least one notch better than the stated pay table, so basically 125% of the normal royal. I do not enjoy volatility but if DDB is the best game there I will play it. I don't have an issue with $5 Jacks or Better but $1 or less single line bores me, I would at least go with Bonus Poker or a Deuces type game.

from that list, i would just play 9/6 JoB and it's not even close.
but i find it to be a boring game so it depends on your desire.

points for future comps/free rooms or just having fun?

if having fun, i would pick the 2nd highest return, 9/7db. the excitement level of getting special quads.
the difference between 9/6 and 9/7 db/ddb strategy is hold 3 to a flush over lone high card
ie: A38 spades
Craps is paradise (Pair of dice). Lets hear it for the SpeedCount Mathletes :)

I find all video poker enjoyable. Points for comps yes, I've also managed to score a progressive for $3000+ and .25 cent royal flush which both more than pay for each trip we were on. So ideally you sit down and within X number of hands I'd score a big payday and feel like a genius.

One thing I've done in the past, ironically when I hit the royal, is every so many hands I'd up my bet for a few hands then go back down for a few hands. I found that kind of a thing enjoyable even if it technically has no effect on the machine itself.
