OK, I recently have been training with Video Poker for Winners. I am now on intermediate level and am confused when it brings up hands with suited 10's and face cards. Here's the typical scenario:

J(H), 10(H), K(D), 8(S), 2(C)

The program will tell me to keep the suited Jack and the 10, which is logical. But then an identical hand like the following pops up:

Q(H), 10(H), K(C), 6(D), 4(S)

And it tells me to keep the unsuited Queen and King!! It's like it's randomly telling me to hold one or the other... These examples are ones that I pulled out of the air so maybe I am missing something when it comes to how many cards are the same suit on the first hand dealt?? Is there a simple way to figure out when to hold the suited face card and the 10?? I really appreciate it!

You can make more straights with J10 than with Q10, and with j10, you don't have to specifically draw a jack to make it happen.

So I need to think outside the box... Here is one I literally just got before I found your message:

Q(S), 10(H), K(H), 8(S), 2(C)

I thought I should have kept my ten and king (which are suited), but the game corrected me to keep the unsuited Queen and King. So this is for more straight possibilities then? Thank you so much for your help! I wish these trainers would have an explanation rather than just telling you what you should have held. Anyone comes up with that and I am buying it in a heart beat!!!!

Is it a common newbie mistake to get in the mindset of having to always be trying to make the royal flush rather than the best possible hand?? LOL

Once you go years without hitting a royal you'll realize you need to make the best possible hand to keep playing before your bankroll is gone. Better to hold two high cards to try for a pair than two suited with gaps for the pie-in-the-sky royal. 3 or 4 to a royal gives you a better shot but be prepared to miss most of the time with those as well!
Each of us is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts. Preparing for a fight about your bad decision is not as smart as making a good decision.

Thank you:) I see that my program is also wanting me to keep three suited straight cards over two high cards... This is another lesson that I have to get down!!

I think so.

If it makes you feel better, when I was a good deal younger and played VP on a handheld game, I'd occasionally have no face other than a Kc (or something) in my hand and reason, "I can't get a Royal holding this pair of Sevens, now can I?"

Of course, there was no money involved....

No, but you can sure as hell make 7-7-7-7-x which pads the bankroll UNTIL the Royal comes along. lol

Maybe you should get the Wizard's Video Poker Analyzer.

I fed the two hands in the original poster's query into the analyzer. I assumed Jacks or Better 9/6. Here's the results:

While it doesn't specifically "tell" you why doing one thing is better than the other, the numbers help you figure it out.

I do have a trainer running on my android tablet that tells me cryptic messages when I mess up... One thing it taught me is to drop the ace when appearing with two other face cards (all unmatched of course).... That one little message taught me more than weeks of playing the trainer software! I still have no idea why this is a great thing to do, other than giving you more cards on a draw to double with the two face cards you save, but having actual WORDS to remember makes it easier ha ha ha!!

You've been playing since then?!?! I am starting to think I am too behind the learning curve >:( I am not planning on giving up though...so sick and tired of being a "casino zombie" staring at a machine and chanting "bonus.....bonus...."! A friend of mine pointed that out to me while in the casino. I looked around and saw what he was talking about. That was the last night I played slots!!!!

I was using it at a bar-top machine last week at Four Queens. I think the bartender got curious and looked at it briefly but didn't say anything.

I think rationalizing why you pick one hand over another only works if that rationalization aids memorization. It's really about probabilities you shouldn't be able to calculate in your head, especially when you get to the bottom of any video poker strategy.

Also video poker for winners will show you an auto generated strategy so you can try to learn all 30-40 steps rather than try to figure it out based on errors in play. The auto generated strategy will not be perfect play but the game will default to warning you when you make a move that is not perfect play so you should change the options to play against the strategy instead of perfect play.

Just FYI, it's technically illegal as it is in my homestate of Missouri. But most employees shouldn't really care.

NRS 465.075 Use or possession of device to obtain advantage at playing game in licensed gaming establishment.
1. It is unlawful for any person to use, possess with the intent to use or assist another person in using or possessing with the intent to use any computerized, electronic, electrical or mechanical device which is designed, constructed, altered or programmed to obtain an advantage at playing any game in a licensed gaming establishment, including, without limitation, a device that:
(a) Projects the outcome of the game;
(b) Keeps track of cards played or cards prepared for play;
(c) Analyzes the probability of the occurrence of an event relating to a game; or
(d) Analyzes the strategy for playing or betting to be used in the game,
Ê except as may be made available as part of an approved game or otherwise permitted by the Commission.
2. As used in this section, “advantage” means a benefit obtained by one or more participants in a game through information or knowledge that is not made available as part of the game as approved by the Board or Commission.

Thanks for the legal info and the info on the training software guys:) Love this forum, everyone is really nice here! So, conveniently, there is a casino in the town I bank at. Had to run in and do the banking and found myself in front of the machines ha ha! Went in with what I have learned and lost 100, but not bad since I was there for around 3 hours... Earned some comps at least. Was dealt almost a pat hand of a hearts royal, needed the 10. Hit deal after holding the other cards and sure as heck a red 10 pops up, ten of diamonds >:( I'm convinced that was intentional!! Thanks for all the help! If anyone else has an idea of better training software please let me know!!
