I have put in 20 or so hours trying to learn a good strategy for video poker but the level I am most comfortable playing is at $5 a hand. After looking at vpfree2.com, it would seem that most strip casinos offer full pay JoB (which seems to have the easiest strategy) at $5 per credit (so $25 per hand for proper play). I am assuming that the other machines with worse pay tables are just not listed on that site. Is it better to play at a full pay machine with a single credit or max credits on a reduced pay table machine assuming the cost is equal?

*edit* Nevermind, I think common sense would dictate its better to play on the full pay machine. Just rough eyeballing math and playing on the full pay machine should return twice as much money as is lost on royal flushes in higher pay outs for other hands.

Check out Downtown and off-Strip.

At both the 4 Queens and Cal there's full pay Double Bonus (10/7) at $1 ($5 per hand). I think the 4 Queens may also have $1 full pay (9/6) JoB in the multi-denomination machines by the Sports Book.

Using the Wizard's video poker analyzer, 9/6 JoB with 1 credit bet (RF=250 instead of 800) has a return of 98.37%
At max credits (RF=800), 9/5 JoB returns 98.45% and 8/6 JoB returns 98.39%, which are just barely better.

I would not worry about it too much though unless there is a huge gap between the best and second best video poker game available such as 9/6 JoB vs. 6/5 JoB with nothing in between. I of course would prefer playing max bet because I am used to doing so.
Always look for opportunities.

Basically I agree, If its full pay 100%, subtract 1.25% for the single coin Royal. So one needs to look for 98.75% or better on the non-full payouts.

Full Pay Deuces = 100.7%, so with a 1 coin Royal, payout is "merely" 99.45%.
Double Bonus Full Pay is 100.17% or about 98.92% for 1 coin royals.
Some people need to reimagine their thinking.

I would argue that it's better to play 5-coin 9/5 Jacks at $1 denomination than to play 1-coin 9/6 Jacks at $5 denomination for three reasons:

1) The return is slightly higher than 1-coin 9/6 played perfectly (98.45% versus 98.37%)
2) The royal flush prize is not shorted should you hit one
3) The 9/5 machine might accrue cash back/free play faster than the full-pay machine

So it would seem the consensus is to go with the lower pay table with 5 credits unless it is significantly off from full pay. I think I might have more fun with that anyways. I know a lot of serious gamblers don't care about anything besides the game, but I think I would have more fun as a casual player at cheaper slots ("in my place") instead of playing the minimum possible bet around the high rollers.

Or you could play $1 5-coin 9/6 Job at Treasure Island, NY/NY or Luxor.

Or cruise over the freeway to the Palms or Gold Coast and play lots of different 9/6 JoB options like 25c 5 line, 25c 5-line Super Times Pay, etc.

There is simply no reason to play crap VP paytables in Las Vegas.
