He's here
Straight from Venice Beach

link to original post

Wow! Glad to see he’s still doin’ his thing! I grew up near Venice Beach, and I’m pretty sure he’s been there since at least the 80’s! I can’t tell from the photo… Was he wearing roller blades/skates and following people around playing guitar?

Thanks for sharing your adventures with us, terapined! (Every time I see your name, I think of my Dad’s old Hudson Terraplane pickup from the 30’s, and Robert Johnson’s “Terraplane Blues”.)

Edit to add: The gentleman in the picture had a cameo in White Men Can’t Jump. They used quite a few of the guys I used to play pickup with as on-court extras…

He's in shoes pulling his cart full of t shirts and other stuff he's selling. He's here every weekend selling his wares at Shakedown, the deadhead marketplace. Saw him yesterday at the Tuscany casino where Shakedown is in their ballroom now.

Another Dead and Co show. I was on the floor in general admission for this one. Watching all the previous shows, all the spinners seem to be on Jeff's side with plenty of dancing room. It was great. Never felt crowded. Sphere service is outstanding as they send waitresses deep into general admission. Hopefully they made great tips. Amazing seeing them navigate through dancing deadheads with a full tray of drinks. Being on the floor, felt more like a concert then a sphere show. You do look up a lot lol. Another show tonight. Woohoo

6/7/24 Dead and Co, The Sphere, Las Vegas NV
Set 1
Uncle John's band
Franklin's Tower
Loose Lucy

Drums

Looks like Rain
Truckin
Throwing Stones
Casey Jones

Video I took of Franklin's Tower. Too much fun :-) "Roll away, the dew, roll away, the dew"

About 150
That's my magic number
I will buy any Sphere tix any section except the limited Sphere view which is the 100s sections rows 28 and back.
Shows are not sold out
I can buy a limited Sphere view any night for about 190 so that's always my backup to get in the building.
Luckily been able to find 150 tix every show which is pretty deeply discounted depending on section
The Cash or Trade app is my friend
That's where I buy the majority of my tix

I was home from college for the Thanksgiving weekend.
Old high school friend called and asked if I wanted to see the Grateful Dead. He and friends had an extra ticket.
Checked with my parents
It was an afternoon Thanksgiving meal as is typical with a lot of families
They didn't mind if I went out that night
My 1st Grateful Dead show was on Thanksgiving 11/23/78 and they played Terrapin Station 😀
I was hooked

Golfing today with younger friend (he also does some private equity investing so he must make big $$) who has never been to Vegas. Not interested in gambling. But….. he and his wife like the Grateful Dead…. They are going to see the show at the Sphere soon. 4 nights at the Venetian, the tickets, maybe a few other things for…. $4k….
I told him about you going to every show and loving it….

Cool story
It's a destination event for Deadheads
He bought the Vibee VIP package
Those packages are pretty overpriced but to each their own
I was gifted a 2 night Vibee package
Below is the swag I got from the package. Cool bag and poster. Haven't looked at the poster yet lol
I'm depending on people booking trips then for one reason or another can't make the trip like the guy that gave me the vibee. Been able to pick off deeply discounted tix off the secondary market from people that bought but can't make the show

Another Dead and Co show in the books. John kind of flubbed St Stephen as he went into a guitar riff just as Bob stepped to the mic to sing and John caught his mistake and stopped the riff. For the 1st time in a long long time, I did not recognize a song. Bobby covered Bob Dylans I'll Remember You. I didnt know it was a Dylan cover till after the show when I looked it up. Ive seen Dylan a lot of times and I dont think I ever heard him perform it. Very mellow song. The band changed Fire on the Mt and I think it's an upgrade. Last 3 Sphere versions, Mickey rapped the whole song. Tonight's version, Oteil then Bobby then John sang the lyrics then Mickey closed out the song with a rap. Love the Sphere employees. They clap and cheer us on as we leave the building after every show

Another killer Dead and Co show. Love the 1st time played in the Sphere tunes and got 2 of them. Black Throated Wind and the tender China Doll sung beautifully by Oteil. The Help>Slip>Cold was thrilling. Terrapin Station was magnificent as usual. Dear Prudence was incredible. Starts so softly and ends so strong with the "round and round" chorus. John actually applauded the band clapping as if saying we nailed it. Wonderful that they finished this show with the old favorite, Ripple.

Another killer Dead and Co show. Show number 15 for me and I finally got a Viola Lee Blues and it was great. Been begging for it every show. The Sugaree was one of the best I've heard. John was shredding and going for it. Really incredible version. Cumberland Blues was fantastic as John rocked the hell out of that one. The band is on fire and the word is out. This was easily the toughest show to get a tix so far. Few bargains to be had and a packed house. Got lucky and was able to get front row, off to side, behind general admission. It was a great place to watch the show. After show party in the Copa Room rocked as the band just played Jerry Garcia Band tunes. Miss those songs. Even Dead and Co doesn't play that material.

I'm in the middle of the Dead and Co residency
Traveling is the last thing on my mind
Right now I'm all about getting next week's tix lol
The band is playing so well. Hot show after hot show
The word is out and tix bargains are real hard to find now
I'll probably leave Vegas once the residency ends
My only obligation in life is to be in the FL pan handle to renew my license. Has to be done in person because it's the year I have to get my pic taken

Wonderful to hear these songs again live because Dead and Co don't do JGB material

Some news mentioning the Grateful Dead. Their 50 year ticketed concert attendance record was just broken.

I will put it in spoilers just in case someone wants to guess.

I have seen quite a few George Strait shows. He played the T-Mobile arena in Vegas a lot. I never once paid a cent to see him as my company had suites at T-Mobile and those tickets were always available for employees.

Just secured my Thur, Fri and Sat tix to the Sphere this coming weekend
Who's got an extra for tomorrow nite ???
No doubt there are many that have tomorrow's tix but no interest in the Dead.
Do I have to resort to holding up a 100 dollar bill on the Venetian bridge to the Sphere
Can't believe my boys are playing a private show

This weekends poster. Yes there are weekend posters and individual show posters
This band is on fire and the word is out. Just about every show is blowing me away. Jerry Garcia brought it sometimes and sometimes he didn't. John Mayer brings it every single night. So thrilling to hear his creativity within each song as Bobby gives him plenty of room to explore. The Sphere show is enjoyable but bottom line, I'm there for the music. Hopefully get a few songs not played in the Sphere yet this weekend

Another killer Dead and Co show. Number 17 for me. Got another 1st time played in the Sphere tune, Easy wind. Great they played the Band classic, The Weight in the middle of the 1st set. Oteil, John , Jeff taking turns singing with Bobby closing with a falsetto voice. Casey Jones Set closer was insane with John going crazy on guitar as Oteil was totally playing the crowd on his side of the stage getting down crouching with his bass guitar. One of the Best Casey jones I ever heard. 2nd set opens with a Help>Slip>Deal. So unpredictable what comes after Slipknot these shows. Love getting the traditional Scarlet>Fire. The transition was pretty intense and Fire for the 2nd time has the band singing the tune with Mickey rapping at the end. Touch of Grey a wonderful way to close out the evening.

Another show. Number 18 for me. They are taking a break next weekend which is cool for me. These shows are wearing me out lol. Sphere was sold out. I was literally in the last row of section 102. At this point, just trying to get in as cheap as possible. It was a great place to sit for Drums Space because they use the back speakers above me. Another Sphere breakout, Dylans Masterpiece. Beautifully done. St Stephen was great as John really explores different jams on each Sphere version. Nice to get something different for the last song instead of the usually predictable Sat Nite song.

When somebody doesn't believe me, I could care less. Some get totally bent out of shape when not believed. Weird. I believe very little on all forums

Looking forward to this tomorrow
Dead and Co have been finishing up at around 11:10pm to 11:20pm. No doubt they scheduled the 11:40 pm show for the crowd exiting the show tomorrow.

Do you get a ‘free’ poster with your ticket? Or are they for sale inside? Do you have one from each show you’ve been to? I now know two couples that have made the trip to see the shows.

Posters are big business
Many are limited editions
There are single show posters and weekend posters
I don't buy posters
I'm treating my nephew to 3 shows in Aug
Looking forward to tonight's show
Probably get a U.S. Blues since it's July 4th

Show number 19 for me. The band is still cooking. Opened with a Sphere first Liberty. Bobby belting out "I'm gonna find my own way home". Jack Straw was great with John and Bobby looking at each other synching up for the big jam at the end. Althea was awesome with John making faces shredding on his guitar. Marvelous St Stephen as John is very creative in his exploratory jams. Help>Slip>Terrapin was great. Beautiful Knocking on Heavens Door and closing with a rocking Casey Jones.
Sphere had a special outdoor show celebrating their 1 year anniversary with sound. They got speakers outside and it sounds great. They also had synchronized drones. Pretty impressive

Show number 20 for me. Only 10 more to go lol. Another strong show from the boys. Back in the haptic seats for this one. Drums Space such a wild ride in these seats. I'm trying to get in cheap so a lot of times end up with non haptic seats. Bobby is 76 years old and can still belt out the lyrics to Good Lovin. Another 1st time Sphere song, the Pigpen classic Next Time You see Me. Loved it. Please mix it up 😀. I'm all for 1st time performed songs in the Sphere. Brand spanking new visual. Oh yea. New visuals also get me excited. This time it's Hampton Coliseum. I saw the Grateful Dead and JGB there back in the day. The JGB show there was one of the best ever with Bruce Hornsby sitting in for the whole show. Memories. Exiting the Sphere, they now have music blasting outside. Not really digging that. Maybe its their music choice. Of course finished up the night at the Copa Room at the Tuscany casino.

Another strong Dead and Co show. Number 21 for me. They opened with Iko Iko. Bobby actually sang a Women are Smarter verse. Both songs very similar. Wonder if this is on purpose or a screw up. Another Sphere 1st, Big Railroad Blues. I like Sat nite as a 1st set closer and it rocked. Eyes of the World , the gave Oteil a chance to show off on Bass. John was having too much fun on Sugaree and caught some of it on video. They flashed Jerry during Morning Dew and I caught it. Sat next to a girl that has seen John Mayer live 30 times and this was her 1st Dead show. Fascinating. Finished off with the Copa room after show band
