Yes you were saying that Begonias typically comes before Fire.
Do you hand down the play lists from memory or they are posted on some deadhead fan site after the concerts?
One thing I understand about Dead concerts is that the band actually encourages people to come and tape the shows (audio tape in the old days, I assume video these days) and the very front row is understood to be for them, where they set up their high end audio or video equipment. Still that way?
Another thing about Dead concerts from what I have been told is that people who come early get to "camp out" and mark their area near the stage, and then it is understood that people who come later respect their space. Unlike, say, a punk show where the mosh pit is anything goes, or a typical rock concert where people shove up to the front whenever they can, if they can. I wonder if that sort of "respect the space of those who come earlier" is still respected at a Dead & Co. show.
In general though, I thought that after that Who concert in 1979, that "general admission" was gradually faded out or even banned in some cities. All the big concerts we have gone to over the past twenty or so years, they have assigned seats on the floor no general admission. I haven't seen general admission at any Rolling Stones concert I have been to, when they had general admission for the Stones must have been before my time.

Scarlet Begonias and Fire on the Mountain generally played as a pair but not always
Last weekends show had a very unusual Fire on the Mt. Usually Oteil sings. Instead Mickey Hart rapped the lyrics. He's done it before but its extremely rare.
In the old days I used to write the setlist down on paper
Now I simply check the internet
Audio taping is still allowed
The taping section has always been behind the concert soundboard.
I used to audio tape for many years. Especially Allman Bro and Bela Fleck
Video was not officially condoned but tolerated in the old days.
These days, everybody records video
Lots videos on youtube of the Sphere concert
One person tried to stream the concert live at the Sphere on Facebook live
That's against Sphere policy
Sphere saw the live stream, sent security to the section.
Security yelled out the Streamers name and told him to stop. He stopped
Old days people brought blankets to general admission to establish their space
Blankets not allowed at the Sphere
General admission areas of Dead shows generally pretty mellow
Looking forward to tonight's show
Surprised Casinos don't take action on what songs will be played.
Tonight's show, hoping for a Dark Star, Viola Lee Blues and Sugar Magnolia. None of these were played 1st weekend
It's been a fairly easy tix to buy
I paid full price for Show 1,2,3 when they initially went on sale
I bought substantially discounted tix for shows 4,5,6 7. Some half price.
None of these shows are selling out
About 95% capacity each nite
I buy the discounted tix on the "Cash or trade" App
App created by deadheads for deadheads to sell or trade tix at face value or less. It's an anti scalping app that Deadheads love
Well no one may say you're not a true fan, going to multiple Dead shows like that. 🤩
Quote: MDawgYes, the Sphere would be the exception then for General Admission on the floor. Was the same at U2 @ Sphere. I guess they think they can control it and avoid havoc.

The Sphere sends waitresses into General admission
No way they could do that with a rowdy crowd
I hear the waitress service is very quick
No doubt they are making good tips
No way I buy GA tix. Too old for that
I like having a seat.

Navy strength?
link to original post
terapined,
From Wikipedia:
Plymouth also make a 'navy strength' variety of Plymouth Gin, which is 57% ABV (100° English proof), being the traditional strength demanded by the British Royal Navy.[13] It was a tradition in the Royal Navy that all newly commissioned vessels receive a "Plymouth Gin Commissioning kit", a wooden box containing two bottles of navy strength Plymouth gin and glassware.[14]

It seems that no matter what device the smoker is using, including this one
the second hand smoke is harmful.
Even before I used to play at private tables I would have a No Smoking sign set down and not let anyone smoke near me, including vapes.
It's disrespectful to smoke anything in public where No Smoking is the rule, especially in a closed area. And illegal. Do the Deadheads smoke so much that they just don't care and let people smoke right and left inside the Sphere 'round them?
I am sure some people have been kicked out of the Sphere for smoking inside.

???????????
Going to a Dead concert and expecting no pot smoking????
Ain't happening lol
The Sphere has excellent air circulation by the way
This is the same corporation that owns Madison Square Garden and has a long long long history with the Dead
They knew exactly what to expect regarding smoking when they booked the band. Money talks
Security has been totally cool
When they see it, they ask that you put it out.

It is illegal in the state of Nevada at indoor venues including the Sphere. I believe the Sphere has an outdoor area for people to smoke.
Anyway, it would be interesting to go to a Dead show inside one of the casino's VIP suites, which is the way I've experienced the Sphere, and see if people are smoking in the suites, with casino and Sphere employees serving us, right there present.
Quote: MDawgNot necessarily true that smoking is tolerated at all indoor Dead shows.

Freaky Intermission
I was in section 302 and we had 2 medical emergencies during Intermission. One big lady was going nuts. Security was trying to help her out but she went from combative to totally limp while laughing then combative again. Back and forth. 5 guys and they could barely get her up 1 step. Her body would go limp as she said she didnt want to leave then laugh hysterically. I was in row 4 and it's a real steep 25 row climb to the exit. She must weighed about 250 and they struggled to move her just 1 step. If they grabbed her feet, she would start kicking. They brought in a flexible stretcher contraption made of canvas, got her in it and carried her out. A 10 minute struggle for 1 step to a quick 25 row climb carrying her in about 10 seconds. Just after that I turn around and I see a family behind me. Guy in his 40's , wife and young teen son. Suddenly he goes completely limp. His wife tries gently hitting his face get him to come out of it. Still totally limp with absolutely no response. Wife tries to feel for pulse in neck while somebody runs up the 25 steep rows to an exit to get EMT. The kid is watching this and freaking out crying. I literally thought this guy just died. Nobody knows what to do. His head just sideways with a completelylimp body. Somebody says they notice he is still breathing. Wife keeps looking towards the exit where help should come from. Suddenly he shakes a little and comes out of it. Wow. Amazing. EMT gets there. He says he's fine just wants to sit a minute to gather himself. His wife is there kneeling the whole time with her head down just trying to gather herself. He finally gets up with the EMTs and climbs out with his family.

A lot of Dead songs have evolved since they were recorded.
For me, live music is about improvisation in the moment creating a unique version of a song letting your creativity flow within the structure of the song. It's akin to sports. Yea in practice you try to get your performance perfect like in the studio. Once in front of that roaring crowd, the excitement pushes the athlete or musician to new heights
It's about jamming
This band is really jelling. John Mayer brings it every night. I've been really really impressed with all the shows so far. They seem to be getting tighter. Last night's Terrapin Station was magnificent.
These posters been either hits or misses
Not impressed with tonight's poster

Providence, RI and Meriwether Post Pavilion in MD for sure, and maybe Worcester, MA. All in the early to mid-80's. I remember more about the parking lot scene than the concerts really, but I specifically remember the initial note of Shakedown and the drums at MPP. You just can't get a body-shaking bass note like that from a studio album.
Edit: Oh, and Jerry band at Hampton Beach Casino around 1984.

People other than DRich enjoy sharing good times with other people.
There is no way me sitting in my $100 seat for a Bills game gives me nearly as good a view as the multiple angles a seat on my couch provides via the TV.
Same concept for a live golf tournament. Etc….
I am not a music fan at all, but have enjoyed the people maybe more than the music at the few I’ve gone to.
Seriously, DRich, do you think ANYONE goes to a concert thinks they are going for better ‘quality’ music than they can produce in a studio?

Saw all the Grateful Dead shows there
Great venue
Loved seeing Jerry Garcia Band. He saved some of his best material for JGB
Talk about body shaking drums in today's world
The Sphere and the Deads Drums/Space segment is taking body shaking to a whole new level

By the way, none of the Sphere shows sold out

I suppose not. I don't understand the appeal but I realize we are all different. If I go to live sporting events it is usually college football and generally only if I haven't been to that campus before. I enjoy exploring college campuses that most people would find boring.

My dates are the ones who think the "other aspects" of the live show make up for the musical shortcomings, I generally do not.
There are exceptions. Opera seems to be better live, as are symphony orchestra and big band groups.
Harry Connick Jr. was an amazing show.
For most anything else, I prefer a good recliner and an excellent set of earphones.
Can a too good to be true message from Africa of all places be true
I'm on Reddit alot
Love the community of Deadheads on that site
I get a message out of the blue from a member
He has 3 tix, one for each nite this weekend and a VIP 2 night hotel package at the Venetian for Dead and Co at the Sphere.
He says he can't make the shows. He's in Africa on a business trip.
He doesn't want to go through the hassle of selling
He noticed my posts and likes me. He just wants to give me his 3 tix and 2 nite hotel already paid for. He said if I already have tix then Miracle somebody with his.
I'm very very very suspicious
I provide what info he needs to transfer everything
I get ready to react to any request for money.
I get emails from ticketmaster regarding tix transferred to me. I accept, check my ticketmaster app and 2 genuine tix are loaded. Wow
I get an email from Vibee, they handle the VIP hotel packages. They tell me the person paid the 50 dollar fee to transfer the prepaid Venetian hotel reservation into my name
I'm totally gobsmacked
I send Africa guy an email profusely thanking him and want to at least reimburse the 50 fee to transfer the hotel which is just 2 nights.
He responded with a don't worry about it, he didn't want it to go to waste.
Deadheads are the kindest
I'm excited to pay it forward and Miracle somebody with a free tix to the show
Miracles happen at Dead shows
Staying the Venetian 2 nights is costing me even though prepaid. I have to still pay the 50 a night resort fee and 18 dollar a day parking. Sheesh
Show 10 for me Thur Nite. Still hoping for a Viola Lee Blues
Still looking for a Viola Lee Blues
Will I get one for show 10. Hopefully
Whenever I listen to an old Dead and Co show. I always pick a Viola Lee Blues show
The guy sitting next to me showed up to the seat real late in the 1st set. I asked him where he was. He said on the floor. He told the Sphere he was tired and asked for a seat. They gave him the seat next to me that was apparently unsold. That's some superb Sphere service. I never heard of a venue doing this.
Show number 10 for me. Very exciting to get a Death Don't Have no Mercy. It's not played much. Great way to finish of a concert with one of the greatest classic rock songs ever written, Johnny B Goode

Wow! Glad to see he’s still doin’ his thing! I grew up near Venice Beach, and I’m pretty sure he’s been there since at least the 80’s! I can’t tell from the photo… Was he wearing roller blades/skates and following people around playing guitar?
Thanks for sharing your adventures with us, terapined! (Every time I see your name, I think of my Dad’s old Hudson Terraplane pickup from the 30’s, and Robert Johnson’s “Terraplane Blues”.)
Edit to add: The gentleman in the picture had a cameo in White Men Can’t Jump. They used quite a few of the guys I used to play pickup with as on-court extras…
