At a nearby casino (Mohegan Sun) last week, I had bought the four and ten for $25 and paid the vig of one dollar each with the bet.
The four hit, and I increased my bet to $35 on the four and paid the vig of a dollar. Subsequently, the ten hit and I did the same thing - increasing my bet on the ten to $35 and paid the vig of one dollar. The dealer asked for an additional dollar vig . I refused to pay it. She said the combined action warrented the additional dollar.
I still refused saying that the bets on the four and ten were entirely separate bets and should not be combined for any reason including figuring the vig. Seeing my mood, the floorman did not support the extra dollar. The boxman was silent. Who was correct?

You were. The dealer was out of her mind. As you say, your bet on the 4 had nothing to do with the 10.

EDIT: If the vig is collected up front, and is $1 on $20 OR $25, then technically, they could charge you $2 on $35.

Just wanted to say that going from $25 > $35 and paying an additional dollar for that $10 increase is a bad proposition:

In this case you are betting $11 ($10 + $1) to win $19. On the other hand, you could place that $10 down to win $18. Although you win less, you "save" that dollar you would have used to buy it. If you really want to you could step your buy bet up to a total of $50 for just $1 more if you won again.

Congratulations though, hitting two of those before a seven out is a really good feeling.

Edit: Also if you like playing like that you can do it in Vegas without paying the vig up front ($25 pays $49, not $25+1 pays $49). Also at the Santa Ana Star Casino you can do it completely, 100% vig-free.
