I found out a few days ago that an old buddy of mine is part-owner of several race horses. I figured what the hell, I should put a bet down the next time one is racing. Since I have an account with BetMGM I logged in to their sport book but while they seem to have just about every sport known, I didn't see horse racing. Is there some law that prevents them from offering it here in NJ?
My goal of being well informed conflicts with my goal of remaining sane.

Unlike sports and sports betting, horse betting is paramutual, and a portion of the handle goes towards the owners and operators.
Plus, there’s already an established network of off track locations that would object to allowing online horse betting.

I'm assuming you're in the U.S
there are several legal U.S. racebooks and they are legal in most states
they all offer sign up bonuses which you can compare to get the best one
here are few of them:
twinspires.com
Xpressbet.com
DRFbets.com
NYRAbets.com
TVG.com
Amwager.com
the info provided by DJTeddyBear is not correct
online betting on horse racing has been legal and available in the U.S. for - I'm estimating - around 20 years

I think TVG has online betting, although it may be limited to races being broadcast on its channels.

that is not correct either - they offer multiple tracks - way, way, more than what they offer on their TV broadcast
