Hey, I remember Rowland Office! I grew up pretty close to where the Braves and Expos used to train in South FL. I recall hearing his name announced at spring training game one time and thought it sounded like "Rollin' Office," which created an interesting visual in my young mind.Quote: smoothgrhWho has the weirder name? Sixto Lezcano or Rowland Office?
I give Rowland Office a slight edge in weirdness because Lezcano sounds like it could be a common name. Plus I like saying Sixto Lezcano. Sixto Lezcano. Sixto Lezcano.

However, I think of all 4 major NA team sports, the NHL has a lock on interesting names. My favorite was Darcy Wakaluk.

some of them are jaw dropping
I love it when the outfielder climbs the wall to rob the guy of a homer - about 4 or 5 them in this

Where I live we have both the Red Sox and Twins spring training. I try to go to one game for each team.

Good video. And they can't really practice that, like they do their throwing and hitting. Just pure athletic ability.
amusing YT vid that shows some outrageous (usually) no calls on traveling in the NBA
it's quite humorous - the vid got 8 million views
a few of the no calls are truly ridiculous
at 2:31 the announcers count Paul George taking 7 steps on the way to a dunk - I counted just 6
at 4:58 there is a no call on a very blatant double dribble - really amusing
a great one is last - at 5:30 Westbrook just starts walking - literally walking up the court while holding the ball - very bold - I guess he thinks he can get away with it because he's a star
Steve Kerr isn't happy about it and admits his own team does it - see link

OKC Thunder didn’t play
Gilgeous Alexander
Holmgren
Hartenstein
Jalen Williams
Luguentz Dort
Wallace
Probably 85% of their usual points in a game. They won in a rout anyway.
Quote: SOOPOOMy Jokic crush…. He has another triple double tonight…. Two minutes into the 3rd quarter.

Jokic finished with 31/21/22. First EVER to break the 30/20/20 mark. Every point/rebound/assist needed in OT win. They were +8 with him on court, even with him on the bench. A 21 rebound game is rare. A 22 assist game is rarer. Add 31 points and it is a ‘gameagami’.
SGA didn’t play. His team still wins in a rout. It is really incredulous that SGA is now favored to win the MVP. SGA continues to have one of the best scoring years, but the rest of his game doesn’t come close to adding up to Jokic’s value.
I'm sure he'll do it again, for the first time.
the vid - Wilt in college blocking a shot with his head way over the rim and his hand over the top of the backboard - WOW - yt delivers - (stop it at 6 seconds)
was he the GOAT - imho yes - the naysayers will say the competition he faced wasn't near as tough as today - which is of course true
some stats - had a 100 point game - averaged 50.4 p.p.g. one season - the highest scoring average of all time
they didn't track blocks and steals back then but somebody went back and counted the them -
per Wiki - he had an unofficial quadruple double - 24 points, 32 rebounds, 13 assists and 12 blocks
per Wiki - he had an unofficial quintuple double - 53 points, 32, rebounds, 14 assists, 24 blocks and 11 steals
he's the only Center ever to lead the league in assists
Wilt grabbed the most rebounds ever per game averaging 27.2 in one year
he was truly unreal

Quote: billryanI don't think a 30-20-20 in overtime should count. Most people discounted Wilts's 78-point game as it was in triple OT. I'm in their camp.

Overtime is a natural part of the game. Do you think Curry doesn’t have 4000 3’s because 50 were in OT? Erase 300 of Kareem’s points because they came in OT?
I’ll agree with you that is of course harder to get a 30/20/20 game without it going to OT. But no one else has done it in NBA history including ALL the games that went to OT.
Hence, in many ways, the best game ever.
I’d take the ‘no’ on him doing it again. The 20 assists part is plain ridiculous.
He didn’t have as gaudy a stat line, but his domination of the second game last week against OKC must be making those that want SGA to be MVP a little uneasy.
I think single-game NBA records should only be for regulation. If someone scores 101 points in eight overtime periods, do you think people would accept that it broke Wilt's record. If someone hits five home runs in a 15-inning game, do you think that sets the single-game record? MLB doesn't.
I think MLB handles this correctly. The NBA, not so much.
Quote: billryanCareer records and single-game records are very different. Strike out 25 in an extra-inning game, and while it doesn't set the single-game record, it counts for both the season stats and the career stats.

I’m surprised at MLB then. I thought OT and extra innings were part of the GAME. And these records are for a single game.
Enough of our semantics spat. Jokic is the best player in the NBA. The Most Valuable Player in the NBA. The most efficient player in the NBA. Oh yeah…. tied for 5th in Steals per Game.

I think most people would think it does. The season long statistics bother me more because the number of games played changes. 1000 yard rusher in the NFL used to be a big deal especially when they played 12 games. Now that they play 17 regular season games a 1000 yard rusher us no big deal.
a not so great moment in sports
Bobby Knight gets a technical foul for protesting a foul call on Indiana when playing Purdue
after getting the technical he throws a chair across the floor
he got 2 more technicals and was ejected from the game
and he was suspended for one game and got 2 years probation from the Big Ten
lots of other stories too about Knight's nastiness

I don't know if you watched that game but Col St shot terribly but their offensive rebounds kept them in the game. I did have Col St +8 so I was happy with the outcome.
Ben McCollum heading to the Iowa Hawkeyes as new basketball coach. Most people probably are not familiar with him but he was highly acclaimed especially when he had a record of 121-2 over three years. He did win four national championships. A great pickup for Iowa but sadly Iowa has a real hard time recruiting inner city kids to Iowa City. Hopefully the NIL money may change that.

yes, it was definitely a travel
it's very sad for Colorado State that they lost a game when traveling should have been called
lots of press coverage calling it a travel that you will find if you search it out
he took 3 steps after picking up his dribble - a player is only allowed two
NBA refs are very bad at calling this - I'm not sure about college - I don't watch enough of it to know
I believe the NBA refs deliberately let top stars get away with traveling
i posted this vid here before - it's worth posting again - it's quite comical - some outrageous traveling no calls in the NBA

the Lakers are tied for 4th in the Western Conference with a 43-28 record
they're 28-9 winning 75.7% of their games on their home court
and they have a losing record away - 15-19
that's really extreme - I don't believe I've ever seen anything like that before
.
a wild brawl breaks out in the Pistons/Timberwolves game
the action is fiercest around 4:53
lots of Coaches involved and they got some licks in too - really crazy

He was switched, against his will, to designated hitter from his usual 3rd base position. Can’t help but wonder if this is another primadonna trying to force a trade. He’s a bad fielder, but before this ‘slump’ he was a top tier hitter.
Quote: SOOPOORafael Devers. 15 strikeouts, no hits, in his first 19 official at bats. Struck out 11 times in his last 15 at bats last season. These are historically bad numbers.

Maybe they will send him down to the minors. Their triple A team plays here in Fort Myers. Although he has been slumping he still batted decent and had pretty good power last year.
What do you expect from him, he is only making $27 million this year?
Announcer said he’s putting together the best season in NBA history, but won’t win the MVP.
This is my (around bi monthly) rant about how anyone can vote for anyone other than him. SGA is having a great year. Just not as great as Jokic.
I was watching the game. Denver was in control, rested Jokic, and TWolves came back. I’m guessing Jokic gets FAR less rest once the playoffs start.
Quote: SOOPOOJokic had 61 points in his triple double last night. As is par for the course, he is the first player in NBA history to score that many points in a triple double. The getting 10 rebounds part is no big deal, but getting 10 assists while scoring 61 is silly good.

I was surprised to see that Jokic was +1000 to win MVP while SGA was -2500.

SGA is playing on one of the best (regular season) teams in NBA history. Jokic is playing on (if he wasn’t on the team) one of the worst teams in NBA history. I watch a lot of the sports talk. They all seem to agree that Jokic is having the best season in NBA history, but SGA is the MVP. MVP is an individual award, not a team award. Jokic is the MVP.
But anyone who has ever played golf knows how ridiculous only missing 3 putts in a round is.
Quote: SOOPOOWatched a little golf. The pros play on greens that tend to be much faster (thus tougher) than us duffers. Sam Ryder had 21 putts in 18 holes today. Meaning he missed 3 putts all day. It can be a misleading statistic. If you miss the green by a foot and pitch it up to a few inches that few inches is your one putt for the hole.
But anyone who has ever played golf knows how ridiculous only missing 3 putts in a round is.

I didn't see it but my first assumption is that he may have missed more than three putts by holing out from off of the green.

Nope. No hole outs. But a few close chips to ‘gimme’ range.
Two outs in the ninth inning, man on first after the pitcher's fourth walk of the day. The batter hits a line drive between first and short, but it hits the runner. The umpire rightfully calls the runner out as the ball hits him, and the game ends. The pitcher's teammates swarm the field, celebrating what they think is a no-hitter. The Manager knows better and has to ruin the celebration.
The obscure rule states that the runner is automatically out if a batted ball hits a runner. However, the batter is credited with a hit.
No no-hitter as the last out of the game was a hit.
