Didn't he lose 13 million on the superbowl betting against the seahawks? Maybe he's hoping to get it back by betting for them now.

That was only a rumor. Never posted any betting slips etc.. Mayweather denied it if memory serves.
Makes a lot of sense, not only from his end, but from the book's. Doesn't really cost Floyd much and he gets enormous amounts of publicity. I know Cantor takes large bets, but they probably don't want quite that level of risk. Even if they're not afraid of Floyd having a lucky run, surely they'd be afraid of a Phil Ivey scenario.
Quote: RigondeauxI heard somewhere that he immediately hedges all these big bets.

Cantor may hedge/lay off some of them, but doubt Floyd does. It would be a big mistake to under estimate the intelligence of Floyd Mayweather. He's his own manager for starters, doesn't let the Don King's of the world into his business. He takes advantage of things in the ring such as jamming his thumb in a guys mouth when the referee isn't looking and knocking the one guy out recently during a "break" etc.. Some of it alone seems like he's a thug, but he keeps taking every advantage presented. I've learned to like him for some reason. I'm going to put my life savings on him if he ever fights Manny.
Bet 100k. Bet 90k or whatever on the other side. Have action on the game. For the price of some extra juice, he gets half the internet buzzing about "Money" Mayweather without paying a dime to a publicist. Seems pretty savvy to me. Hell, he might even get a break on the juice from Cantor in exchange for all the free publicity they get.
Quote: RigondeauxI think highly of Floyd in a lot of ways. He's perhaps the all around most intelligent athlete in the world. That's why I think he might realize that he can't just walk up to the window and beat sports off the top of his head.

I could see this being very possible. I was just thinking the other day...I know who Mayweather is (hi LarryS!!!), but I don't know who any of the current heavyweight champ(s) are. Does anyone on the forum know without internet aid?
But your overall point is on. After Floyd and Manny go, boxing is going to be just about a complete niche sport, especially in the US.

I had to Google/Wiki that, since I thought I was 100% sure I'd never heard of any such name until reading this just now.Quote: RigondeauxI love boxing, though I bet I'm the only one here. So I might not count, but I think most sports fans know that Wlad Klitschko is the champ. At least the main one.
And I'm still not quite sure if I've heard of him, since Wikipedia gives me no help at all trying to guess how to say that, let alone "Volodymyr Volodymyrovych Klychko."

I'll give Mayweather the benefit of the doubt BUT I'm not sure there are very many people who'd admit losing that much on such an embarrassing game especially for someone who has a carefully crafted media image as a winner. The rumor had to come from somewhere.
Nope I Love boxing. A good fight is right up there with NFL playoffs. I used to throw big BBQs and pool parties every big fight. Unfortunately just like many other things I've just gotten away from keeping up with it.Quote: RigondeauxI love boxing, though I bet I'm the only one here
Who is who is this FM guy anyways ?

I heard of Klitschko, but forgot he was a heavyweight. Oops.

I had too, for a few years. As much as I love it, I wasn't really in a position to spend $1,000/yr on watching it on TV. By the time I could afford it, it no longer seemed worth it. Then I discovered that almost any fight you want to see can be found online. Went on a huge binge of all the big fights from recent years and got back up to speed.
I miss the good, classy heavyweight fighters that used to epitomize boxing.
The Klitchko brothers just don't float my boat.
I also miss guys like Hagler; he was great in his division.
And no, I cannot take mixed martial arts fighters seriously.
