In our continuing look at advantage plays in slots, our next game will be Magic of the Nile.
This game features three obelisks, each associated with a feature. Expanding reels, Random Wilds, or Multiplier Wilds.
When the player gets a scarab, it will hold either a red, blue, or green gem. If the player accumulates three green gems, he will get a free spin with the expanding wild feature. Three blues earns a free spin with multiplier wilds, Three reds earns a free spin with expanding reels.
The count of gems is shown by the number of illuminated sections of the associated obelisk.
Once the player plays one of these feature spins, that obelisk will reset to zero pieces illuminated.
There is also a free spin feature if the player gets three or more Pyramids on any one spin. In free spins the player doesn't need to accumulate three gems to get a feature spin, but gets it immediately. A gem will also increase the free spins remaining by one.
This video shows the various features. I indicate time stamps where each can be found.

Expanding reels: 1:43
Random wilds: 3:04
Multiplier wilds: 3:50
Free spins: 8:22
The big question is how many pieces should be already lit up to jump in and play? Are some features worth more than others?
The question for the poll of the machine AP's of the forum is how many pieces do you require to play?

how many pieces depends on the rtp and which columns.
Green is the least desirable.
i put the red and blue as equal.
in the high limit room, i would play 2 red or blue with 1 of another. i assume the high limit room is 91%+ rtp.
else i would only play 2 columns of 2 and walk away when it's no longer in that condition

Thank you!
Know Your Slots has a good page on the game. As usual, that site explains the rules well, but is not specific on when the game turns positive.

Green is definitely the weakest column. Biggest problem with this game is catching plays. Pretty obvious when it is in a good state. Can just glance as you walk buy and see what state each bet level is at.

I just had a conversation with a machine AP who is not a forum member. He spoke to me on conditional of anonymity only.
He said he would always play with five or six gems and never with three or less. Four, he said, is marginal, depending, in part, on the casino. It sounded like he would play four at an off-strip casino, but not at a tight Strip property.
He also said he would prefer to play two sets of two gems, as opposed to a two gems of one color and one each of the other two. In other words 2-2-0 > 2-1-1.
I asked him if he felt green gems (which lead to the random wilds) were the weakest and he said he used to think that, but now believes each gem has about equal value.

Green and blue together is great but double triggers seem to be pretty rare.

Right now I have a very simple rule of thumb where I will play if there are 4 total levels across all obelisks. I haven't tested it extensively though since the game isn't in my home casino.

One of my favorite games for running freeplay with three or four squares filled. Quit when the bonuses are kicked.
This is at places that don't allow freeplay on video poker.

Been playing this game since it came out and I never realized it was Magic (of the) Nile, I’ve always called it Magic Nile lol.
