A recent LVA online poll asked what was the most annoying type of player. One person said, "The Catfish," and described somebody who vultures Ultimate X multipliers (occasionally with a partner who talks a player into switching machines first).

Is "catfish" a popular term for this? I thought "vulture" was fairly universal.

Catfish are bottom feeders so that's probably how this guy thought up the term.

I'm not annoyed by people who vulture, but I am annoyed by people who do it badly. Playing off multipliers at 1 coin per hand annoys me more and more - particularly when I see an average multiplier of 3x or better on a 10 line game.

If they're pressuring people to get off a machine, that's in poor taste.

If they're pressuring you to get off a machine, say "sure, just 1 more round", switch to 5 coins per hand, play it off, and wish them good luck as you go. (I trust that anyone here would have already checked all the other games/denominations when they sat down...)

The ones who actually tick me off are the buffalo hunters who shove their way in to a machine between two people who are playing, smack the cash-out button, and go (classier scavengers don't shove their way in, aim for machines that aren't next to someone who is playing, sit down, and put their own small tito ticket in), and the people who try and sell their last half pack of crumpled cigarettes for a few dollars.

On the other hand, It's uniquely satisfying to watch security escort the cigarette sellers out, so I almost don't mind them.
May the cards fall in your favor.

"Catfish" is becoming a popular term, but it seems to be ubiquitous for just about anything nowadays.

Typically, it refers to a fake, usually someone online pretending to be someone else. The idea is they put out this fake as bait and just wait for someone to take it, much like actual catfishing. I think that's stupid, because that describes damn near all fishing, but what are you gonna do?

It's also used to describe trash, implying that catfish are ugly, bottom feeding scavengers and anyone described as such would be one, too. The problem is catfish are actually predatory, and are a highly sought after catch for both sport and food. The subsets of fishermen who would consider a catfish as trash a few and far between indeed. I think this definition is stupid, too.

There is one species of catfish that's parasitic. You may have heard of it on "Monsters Inside Me". It's that little guy sometimes referred to as a "toothpick fish". It's the one that's reported to have followed trails of urea and wound up inserting itself into the human male urethra. I suppose I can understand a certain group of casino patrons who might fit this description.

In short, anyone who uses "catfish" in reference to anything other than an actual fish of the order Siluriformes is an idiot. With one exception, of course...

Well, except for gillnetting, seining, trawling, fish farming, fishwheels, harpoons and spears, stunning, trapping, and noodling.

You forgot the kinda fishing where you use sheets or nets or something. Not to mention shotgunning, bombing or grenading, and poisoning as well.

He covered that with gill, seine, and trawling.

And that's covered by "stunning".

But he did forget "tickling", as that's different than noodling. And of course, you could just dive out of a heli and tackle them.
