I dunno, ams288 seems to have the right idea.
RCP is extremely right leaning (check their 2022 Senate/Gov predictions vs. the actual results) so this is surprising.
Many people I listen to have said the recession has been here for months already. It's just being hidden until the election is over. People in the car and housing Industry have been talking session since last winter. The Asian stock markets just took a huge dive today because of the unemployment numbers in the United States. These kinds of things in an election year usually spell doom for any current Administration.

I see it as the difference between driving away with someone's car when you are a tow truck driver doing an impound vs. A thief climbing in and hot wiring the car.
Both are cars being taken from you. One has a legit defense for doing it.
