I've noticed while playing online that the live online blackjack dealers will repeatedly touch, stroke and tap the cards in the shoe.

I've become more and more agitated by this and I can't unsee it while playing and I've begun questioning why they do it in my mind. I'm leaning towards nervousness and fidgeting by the dealer to pass the time as the camera is looking at them in between hands. I've also begun to think a bit more cynically about why they do this. Could there be some form of pattern or texture on the back of the card that the dealer is feeling for? Even a scanner under the table that knows the exact layout of the deck? There's a scanner at the front of the shoe, why not have a hidden one under the felt?

I'm not convinced by this but WHY do they touch the cards so much! They don't do it in live casinos using a shoe.

Has any else noticed this?

It's because the shoes don't slide smoothly down the shoe and if they are not suitable evened out, it can become very easy for the dealer to accidentally draw two cards stuck together. Often the dealer will shake the shoe, to help the cards settle down evenly.
