I'm a nickel and dimer $5 on the pass/come with less then max odds.. once in awhile place the 6/8 or once in a great while buy the 4/10 or lay the 4/10 depending on the table. been getting hit with a lot of shooters hitting point then 7 out.. I do the 5 count thing but then get stuck with come/odds then a 7 out.. been doing the following play lately and it has been profitable

Start with $25 on the DP.
Place the 6 & 8 for $12 each.
If the 6 or 8 hits, regress to $6 each
If the 6 or 8 show again, press the number that hit by one unit.
Continue this method of alternating collecting then pressing until the 7 shows, then start over.

What should I do if the point is 6 or 8? Should I place the 6/8 or just let the $25 DP ride until the 7 hits?

you should place the 6 and 8 as little as possible, as they carry a much house edge than the free odds bet available with your line bet. You should take any money you are using to place numbers and use it for an odds bet on your DP. If you find yourself at maximum odds on your line bet and still want more action, only then should you consider making additional bets.

The House Edge on a Don't Pass bet is 1.4%.
The HE on Placing the 6/8 is 1.52%.
So they're pretty close edge-wise.

With that said, I don't know why you'd want to Place the 6/8 after making it past the come-out roll. You're favored to win your DP at that point, so Placing the 6/8 doesn't make much sense.

Irrelevant. The house edge on the free odds bet is 0.00%. Op said he is playing the dp and doesnt play max odds so the difference between the place bet and the free odds bet is huge.

JK:

Are you having fun?

That is all that matters to me.

IF your trying to grind until someone shoots a good hand, then that is one thing.

If you are doing the DP, then go with the Odd on the DP, instead of the place 6 & 8.

You were comparing the house edges of the DP flat bet and the place 6/8. What you should have been comparing were the house edges of the DP free odds bet and the place 6/8. The DP flat bet is pre-existing and not part of the future decision-making process.
