so my local casino uses 8 decks, H17 around 70% pen for both blackjack and spanish blackjack/australian pontoon. i just noticed however that the dealer burns 6 cards after every shuffle, 1 card after the dealer gets his cards and another card after all players get their cards which is basically 2 cards per round. is it still possible to get an accurate count?

Excess burn cards have no effect on the count.

They are similar to the undealt cards.

I.E. 70% penetration with excess burns is similar to about 60% penetration without all those burns.

I would not attempt these games unless I had thoroughly read and understood Katerina Walker's book "The Pro's Guide to Spanish 21 and Australian Pontoon."

It doesn't change the count, but it does mean that shuffling will occur more often.
