My local casino has 8 deck blackjack with decent rules. 3:2, DAS, double any 2, 7 of 8 decks played, 1 card on aces, no surrender. House edge is about .43.

I was playing last week and a player who was probably playing basic strategy 90% of the time and was up a few hundred betting around 20 a hand joked with the shift manager saying "what would you do if you found out I was counting cards?"

The shift manager replied, "If you can count 8 decks and make money off us, all the power to ya, go ahead, but nobody can, maybe if you were playing double deck it would be different but nobody can count with this many decks"

Do you think the manager really believes this, or was he just playing it off?

I don't know how countable this game really is, but it seems that with a big spread someone could exploit this game and at least gain a marginal edge or at least play 50/50 and get the very generous comps the casino gives. I have seen people playing 2x100 a hand and getting essentially no heat aside from a supervisor occasionally watching a hand when "checks play" is called.

The game is very countable if penetration is deep.
A couple of notes:
1. Any player who wishes to avoid any heat woud be a MORON by taunting the floor supervision by announcing "what would you do if you found out I was counting cards?" - as he had. Duh.
2. Any floor supervisor or pit boss would be a MORON to ask for a takedown by openly announcing to potenital card counters that it is not tracked at that casino, no less by saying - "If you can count 8 decks and make money off us, all the power to ya, go ahead..." Also Duh, as you do not play it off or "play around" with people who could be counting or can take you down when you're responsible for the money in the tables. I'd say "congratulations, Buddy - you just got flat-betted."

If the player got 86-ed for card counting after pretty much announcing it, or the floor supervisor fired for announcing that he doesn't track or care about game protection, it would serve them both right.

I'd like to see surrender in that game, but if they offered it they'd probably go to H17. The game is definitely beatable with the proper
spread, index play and wonging. The 85% + penetration says it all.

The shift manager knows what he's doing. Never discuss counting with anyone on either side of the table.
