Hypothetical question for you: Suppose you were playing two hands at a table and you get a pair of fives on one and a pair of tens on the other; also let's say that you MUST split one of them. Which one would you rather split?

The only way I could possibly think this hypothetical would EVER arise would be in a tournament situation. If you had a basic idea of a count, on a low count, I'd split the 5s to try to create some double-down situations. On a high count, I'd split the 10s to get a resplit. This would allow me to get more chips on the table... thus overtaking a huge chip lead. Then again, why would I be playing two hands in a tournament?

And what casino would require you to split? Hypotheticals are fun, but at least make them realistic.

I was trying to ask in a roundabout way which is a worse move - splitting fives or splitting tens. I know this probably won't happen IRL, but I wanted to make it sound a bit more fun to ask.

I'm sure splitting 5s is worse.

Look at it this way:

Beginners / stupid strategy is to assume that the next card in the deck is a ten.

Would you rather play that ten on a split ten, a split five or a pair of fives?

Forced to split? Split the tens.

I've never split 5s but I've certainly split 10s. One added piece of information: There are some casinos that will only allow tens to be split once- no re-splitting.

I understand the 10s vs. 5s arguments presented. I will say if you're wanting to get money on the table, 5's give you potentially 4 3 doubles and one resplit: 4,6,A gets you a double against a 5,6, 5 gets you a resplit, up to 4 times I presume. You would be better off getting 8 bets out under those circumstances than splitting tens.

Again, not sure why you would do either though..
