Assume: 6 decks, dealer hits on soft 17, player may double on any first two cards, player can double after splitting, player may split to 4 hands, $5 minimum bet.
At a local casino they only use whole dollar chips on the blackjack tables. When you surrender a $5 bet you get $3 back (60%!!) because they don't use silver or $2.50 chips. How does getting 60% on a surrender affect the house edge on a $5 bet? Should you surrender on more 14s/15s versus 10/A?

Yes, surrender as usual plus surrender 15 vs. 8-A, 14 vs. 9-A, and 13 vs. 10-A. Also surrender 8-8 vs. 10 and A. Sorry, I don't know how much it effects the house edge.

With infinite decks I am getting a house edge of 0.36% if you get 60% back on surrender (vs. 0.59% for the normal game).
I am also getting more surrenders - in addition to what teddys said, I am getting 16 (but not 8,8) vs. 7-A and 17 vs . 9-A

but this is sounding like it pays 6 to 5 on BJ, thus no need for $2.50 chip on that pay

You can rest assured that if blackjack paid 3:2 there would be pink chips in the tray. There's no way any casino would pay $8 for a $5 blackjack. Just keep your bets at odd amounts. A $10 surrender will return $5, but so will a $9 surrender.

In that case I am getting 0.99% with 60% surrender vs. 1.94% for a normal game

How much does a BJ pay if you bet, say, $8? I assume $9.
That being the case, I'm sure most people bet in $5 units.
Now add this great reduction of edge when you surrender $5 and lose only $2. I gotta think that would REALLY encourage people to hesitate before pressing their bets.
For that reason alone, if I were the casino manager, I'd put pinks, or half-dollar coins, or even quarters on that table!
Of course, it may work the other way too. An $8 BJ could then pay $9.50 and still be a short-changed payout.

That's not surprising.Quote:You can only bet in multiples of $5.
However, I still say losing only $2 when surrendering a $5 bet is either a good player advantage, or reduces the edge so much that it would discourage players from pressing their bets.
After all, the benefit is greatly reduced when surrendering $15 for $7....
