Upcard Luck is a blackjack side bet I noticed on an electronic blackjack game at the Encore on November 4, 2020. It pays if the player has a good starting situation, given his initial two cards and the dealer's up card. For all the rules and analysis, please see my new page on Upcard Luck.

The question for the forum is would you bet the Upcard Luck if playing blackjack anyway?

One does wonder why they bring in such horrible sidebets - I can only imagine with the higher possible payouts people are drawn in. The original concept of Wizard of Odds was to provide good advice to people so they got better value for their money and suggest people avoided these types of bets. Perhaps this bet is only a single red.

I'm sure you know that that vast majority of gamblers will just plop down in front of any game and play it if it looks fun and is within their budget. That is the reason they make such horrible side bets. Upcard Luck is actually not so bad.

That is the concept of the Wizard of Odds. However, we don't like to beat people over the head with what to do. We present the math and let the reader make his own decision. Sometimes we will issue a finger wagging of shame of something is an egregiously bad bet, but this one would not qualify for that.

That's why my picture has a "Single Red" rather than a "Double Red". It's on a par with Any 7 pays 4 to 1.

My new favorite pastime at the craps table is to explain to people betting any seven why they should “hop red” instead.
The race is not always to the swift, nor the battle to the strong; but that is the way to bet.
