I was looking at the strategy charts and was puzzled by the entries for a hard hand with a total of 4-8 in both the Simple Strategy and Basic Strategy charts. Maybe I'm missing something obvious but how is a hard 4 possible? A 3,1 pair would be a soft 14 while a 2,2 is treated as a pair. Wouldn't it be more accurate to label these rows as 5-8?
My goal of being well informed conflicts with my goal of remaining sane.

Sometimes you are not allowed to re-split thus you could have a hand with 2-2 and would have to hit it. It also saves questions like what do I do with 2-2 since it doesn't say. (There have been other similar discussions about apparently illogical plays, but this caters for either having done something stupid and find yourself where you shouldn't be or possibly where you've run out of money or similar.)

You don't split a pair of 2's if the dealer has a high card, 8-A.

Thanks. I had a feeling I was missing something obvious.

Yup. Another oversight on my part of a non-split scenario. This is why I don't play blackjack very often. Thanks.

Or maybe you get dealt 2-2 and you simply have no more money left and thus can’t split , and therefore need to play the hand as a hard 4
