It was a computer named George.

Of course I wasn't totally serious. I thought that would be obvious.
I was referring to the fact that it would be great to completely
take your emotions out of the game.

I don't want them gone. Just in control.
A number of my friends watched my early playing. Apparently I was unnaturally ice cold. Too obvious. Had to allow some natural reactions back in as cover.

I was just going to say that. APs often have to fake emotions so they don't stand out. Now why did you take the dealer's break card, Dieter? :-)

Huh? The dealer just came back from break.

Yeah, but I adjusted when I stayed on that 12.

Thank heavens for that. Gotta restore the flow after that burn card.

If you have very little or zero emotion when taking a big loss that's great.
I know that other players, even very experienced players struggle with it.the foolish sayings of a rich man often pass for words of wisdom by the fools around him

This, 100%.
The perfect AP blackjack player is the one you've never heard of, has never been backed off or had any heat*, and has a flawless game resulting in millions upon millions in winnings.
*such a player does not exist
Quote: surrender88sWho needs to fake emotions? If you have aces against a five with your max bet out, and you lose both, think about how long it'll take to win back, in EV, the real money you just lost. I can't imagine someone who doesn't feel disappointment in this situation.
It's really disgusting when you draw two 9's and the dealer has 6 underneath then draws two consecutive 5's!
What makes the robot a great blackjack player is being able to perfectly keep 10 different side counts. But what makes robots poor players is that they are banned from playing casino games

Then he would be failing to raise his bets with an edge, which was the qualifier I added that you conveniently cut out of your quote
Again, if a person can continue to raise their bets appropriately with an edge and lower them when the house has the edge, any emotional reaction is completely meaningless to being able to win at blackjack
I'm still suspicious of robots though....what about hand held games. Is the technology yet available for robots to have hands and pick up cards? Even then....robot still has to be able to see the cards!
And a big shiny robot might be a bit suspicious-looking from the POV of the anti-AP surveillance crew.
If by some abomination someone were to create robots with fingers....they wouldn't have the skin-like feeling thing in them and they'd be all metallic, so when they try to touch the screen, nothing would happen.
Robots can't play VP OR BJ.
The ball's in your court, now. :)
Quote: djatcI don't play bj but the basic rule for advantage play is the same: keep your cool and don't chase losses.
That's the basic recipe. And that's the recipe for BJ as well. But the difference with BJ is that you are playing with people (dealer and pit) who are looking to identify you and one of the things they are looking for is a player with just these characteristics. So you have to develop an act.
Say you have a large bet out, you split and get a DD on one of the splits. You have 3x your large wager on the table and lose.
Non-AP player would show emotions of disappointment, frustration, even anger in that situation.
The AP has trained himself to NOT feel disappointment, frustration, nor anger in that situation.
But has part of his 'act' he now has to show disappointment, frustration and anger in that situation. It's a weird little circle.
In hindsight, I wonder is learning not to feel emotions and then 'fake' emotions, screws us up emotionally, in life (outside of blackjack)?? Many of us solo type professional blackjack players have that introverted 'loner' type personality to begin with.

Quote: elvisI can point out that from behind the tables, there can be great variation on the detection methods that floor supervisors use. Mostly, there is no detection going on. Most dual rates are unschooled in AP play and many are housewives or young ladies interested in nothing related to blackjack. They supervise haphazardly on various games and do not care about advantage play. It is rarely stressed in pre-shift and it is a joke when it is discussed. Leeway is given based on many camouflage performances. If I was counting at my casino I would look for young ladies or old ladies or old men who can't see well or anyone who looks uninterested and who looks around to see their pecking order( who is getting the preferred games and who is getting the crappy games in smoke filled sections; watch as some keep looking around into the distance) They cannot be watching their games. Go to a dealer who doesn't speak English well,( that is about 80 percent of dealers sometimes) and even if they somehow announce Chips Play! the non-Asian Floor Supervisor has no idea what the blank he just said. The floor simply says ok and walks away. If the dealer is Haitian or some other 3rd World import the Floor can stand right next to him or her and not understand a word he or she is saying. I would look for that situation and others. Believe it or not, most floors and even most Pits don't care if you are winning. If you are winning $5000 or more the Floor can be required to call the Pit. If it is in a high roller section it is $10,000 or more. Do not win these amounts at one table. If you move to another table the slate is wiped clean. No one wants to call the Pit and he or she is relieved that the guy left when he only won $4000. It looks better for the Floor. It is tiring on the shifts and the sense of humor is the first thing to go when one is very tired. Play to these things. I might share other info later if this is received well. I hate smart alecks.
This is a great post, elvis. Leaning a little bit towards on the 'politically incorrect', in stereotype and characterization but that's more than OK. Thank you much for your contribution. I hope to see more. Reading people and situations is huge.
I have always said, a majority of pit folk are just working Joe's and Jane's, trying to get through their day with as little hassle as possible, just like other professions. It the last couple years, I have really steered my game towards identifying and playing within, what I call each casino's comfort level, but they are also levels, whether betting levels, or session length, that don't cause problems for the floor, where they MUST take some sort of action. I really want them to have the opportunity to do nothing. :) I would LOVE for my play to be invisible....but I am often NOT invisible, so the next best thing is finding and playing levels that we all can live with and all go about our day, as 'easy' as possible.
There are exceptions to the working Joe's and Jane's just trying to get through their day with as little hassle as possible. I call him or her, the 'gung ho' type, looking to create situations where there doesn't need to be one. Luckily, you learn to spot them in short order as well.
Quote: MissEyeI wish this was true. Damn floor supervisors call me to skill check a player anytime someone jumps a bet from $5 t0 $50 more than once.
And that too is part of learning the tolerance and comfort levels of each store, and even each store at different times and days of the week. Your place obviously has low levels. A player needs to figure that out.
Hey, I play El Cortez, the sweatiest of the sweatiest, 2-3 times a week and their tolerance and comfort levels are far different than other places. Gotta do your homework.

Totally true. And even some of our floor people are lazy and won't be as hard ass as others. I played at Fiesta Henderson a few times and there was a guy there that was literally using his fingers to count cards and often spoke the count out loud... no one seemed to care. Meanwhile I could kick back and let him do the work and bet accordingly ;)

If those geniuses in wherever can make a smart phone stylus and sell it for $4, I'm pretty sure it's possible to use a few of them as fingers for an automaton to operate a touch screen with.
Heck, you might even be able to find them at the dollar store by now. You know, for a dollar a piece.

Welcome to the forum, elvis, and thanks for the valuable observations! It does seem important, if you're an AP, that you "play the player, not the cards" in this respect.
