I was playing BJ at a small casino. The rules were typical, nothing special.
It was getting late in the night and all other players left gradually.
Finally only I was at the table. I put my bet ($25) as usual.
The dealer told me: "You have to play two hands."
I was so surprised. I asked "What?" He repeated it again.
I asked "Why? Unheard of!" He explained the rule: "If there is only one player on the table, the player must play two hands."
I asked PB and the PB told me exactly the same thing.
I even asked the PB if this was the rule for all table games, he told me only for BJ.

I imagine it is indeed unusual but the casino could just make you bet 50 on one square so as to increase the action on a Single Occupancy Table, thus making it be viewed by the casino as profitable. This would give the casino even more of an advantage than they have making you play two hands.

I understand the casino's thinking and can't really blame them because dead tables are bad and a nearly dead table means they can't even give the poor guy an Early Out or a break or shift him elsewhere.

It's not about more actions.
In fact I asked later when I went to that casino again : "Can I just bet one hand with double minimum?"
The answer was NO. "You can bet two or more hands with minimum, but not one hand with any amount."

I could not confirm, I suspect that they somehow believed one on one against the dealer, the player could cheat (or some kind of advantage?).
Very weird!

Very weird!

Agreed.. Shows how arbitrary, capricious and down-right whimsical casino rules can be, particularly when they are made by the utterly ignorant.
