Backing up - if $5000 cheque means $5000 chip - the table craps BJ Baccarat whatever is NOT going to even let you play that $5000 chip until you identify yourself and they attach that chip verifiably to your player account.

(¡snip!)

That is the context I understand.
"Check" is a paper financial instrument, drawn on a bank ("Pay to the order of", sign on the reverse),
"Cheque" is a casino issued redeemable gambling chip (without ridges).

There are enough words, meanings, and spellings that sound alike in this context to be obnoxiously confusing. Confound that with the usual term on the player side of the table being "casino chip" rather than "cheque", and wacky fun ensues.

Yes exactly what I mean, sorry for any confusion. "Cheques play" is yelled all the time at the blackjack table and that's usually the game I'm talking about when I have to hide my identity. Poker players are more likely to call them chips.

Also relevant are calls like "foreign cheque", "cheque change 5000", or "cheque down". There may be others, but they don't come to mind.

As for poker players, tournament chips are not cheques.
May the cards fall in your favor.
