An interesting read. There were once, apparently, over 100 card rooms in San Diego. Sole proprietor owned.
I played in at least 50 of them in my youth, in the 70s and 80s. It was poker heaven. And the time collection maximum was $2.50 an hour, no matter the size of the game. A very rich history. Someone should write a big book about the history of San Diego card rooms. Mostly lowball, but a few high draw games also. Good times, great memories.

(the loans turn into grants if most of it is used to pay employees)
now that the pandemic is near it's end, i guess new card rooms will open up since there's now a vacuum?

San Diego card rooms have been “on the way out” for a long time before the pandemic. The article has your answer, there will be no more card rooms in San Diego proper unless laws that have been there nearly 40 years change. The major San Diego AREA card room is Oceans 11 in Oceanside I believe. In the past there have often been more federal raids of California card rooms than the rest of the US casinos combined, lots of loan sharking and KYC violations, the modern day Wild West of gambling.
Good to see you back as well bartop, was hoping you were okay and we’d hear from you again.

Thankyou, Mc3200, good to be back. I'm doing ok. Had a minor heart attack, only 98% blocked. That's like playing 7-5 Bonus Poker perfectly with penalty card adjustments. But you still need a really good promo to beat it. I had really great wonderful people at the hospital, that was my promo. Everyone was so nice. They saved me.
