Hi, just wondering if anyone can provide me with some help, I am currently in AC on vacation from the UK and 2 hours ago hit a $1600 jackpot at Caesars.

They have advised me that they will be deducting 33% of this win for tax purposes unless I can provide them with the correct paperwork,

I am a Diamond member with Caesars and have a host in LV but not here in AC.

For now I took a receipt for the $1600 and said I would speak to a host here in the morning when I wake up.

Does anyone know what forms I need and where I can get them from, they have told me they will not give me or get me the forms.

Why should I pay US tax on my winnings when I am not s US citizen.

Any help is greatly received as they want to take over $500 from me

Thank you

One of our members provided this info a few years ago; no one here can or will guarantee this is everything the casino wants, but:

Actually, according to publication 515 on the IRS website, as a citizen of the U.K., the tax treaty specifically exempts you from being taxed on gambling winnings. They should not hold anything back, no matter the type of winnings. Be sure to have your passport with current visa stamp handy. The cage should have form W8-BEN for you to fill out and sign to verify your "non-resident alien" status, and citizenship in a tax treaty partner. You can apply for a Tax Id number in advance to save some trouble later. If you don't have a TIN, the cage may have to hold 30% of your jackpot until a Taxpayer ID number is generated by the IRS.

Boy, I hope you have this problem, as it means you would have hit a $1200 USD or greater jackpot. Good fortune to you!

Click here for form W8-BEN. You will need to provide either your foreign Tax ID number, or if you have a US one, provide that, along with your passport and current visa. If you call up this form on a computer with a printer link, you will be able to type in your info and print it. Pretty sure all the AC casinos have business centers in their hotels; they may charge you a dollar or two. But even if you just print it and fill it in by hand, it won't take long.

Are the instructions for the W8-BEN, but they are the densest, most incomprehensible tax code I've personally ever seen. If it were me, I'd just try the form, filled out and signed; it's a 1 page with about 8 blanks to fill in.

If worst comes to worst, you can claim and receive the withheld part of your winnings at the end of the year on a US tax form 1042.

Good luck.

Good luck to you.

They had no interest and would not provide me any forms, taxed me over $500 on my $1620 win - they have just guaranteed that I will never return to Caesars in AC or LV.

You will be able to file a tax form with the US IRS to get your money back. It sucks that they took it, but you do have recourse.
At my age, a "Life In Prison" sentence is not much of a deterrent.

Just wanted to say that I really appreciate the irony of a Brit taking issue with US taxes.

Sorry you have to deal with this, hope the filing process goes smoothly. Furthermore, didn't you have something taken out by the state as well?
