It was a good article that describes A.C. both past and present.
Were it fails IMHO is were most of these articles fall short. They just don't talk about why people don't want to live there. Yes the corner grocer getting robbed 1/2 dozen times in two years is a clue.
Atlantic City is a hood plain and simple. It has been a hood for 50 years or so after the White Flight of the 50's and 60's.
Do I frequent A.C? Absolutely it's close by. But I would never venture down those side streets at night. Nor will you see me strolling a deserted boardwalk late at night and I am far from what the local thugs would consider easy prey.
Until someone has the intestinal fortitude to clear out the blighted troubled areas, A.C. will remain a 2nd class destination.
IMHO it really is that simple. Go ahead open a Bass Pro Shop and build more convention space. But until the real problem is addressed I would expect little change any time soon.

I thought the article was very poignant. I live in a beach community only 45 minutes away from Atlantic City. Our beach isn't nearly as nice as Atlantic City's (smaller with not great waves) and yet the housing prices in my community are astronomical. I have always wondered how a community with a beautiful beach could rot away. Asbury Park was in the same condition but is slowly turning around. No, I don't have any suggestions about how to fix this. But it seems that throwing money at the problem isn't doing it.
I give this post an hour. Tee Hee!

Most public employees would be on welfare or in prison if it weren't for friends getting them "jobs". The casino owners take advantage of the simple minded local populace while the city rots. It's s ghetto, sad but true. Hopefully Stockton university can start to turn the tide around. AC does have the best Boardwalk and beach in New Jersey in my opinion.

The local mindset here is hard to describe but it certainly isn't right.

Here is a police call list from Tropicana and Taj

I have nothing but praise for the locals. Watch as this family removes computer equipment from a strangers car.
Surely they were putting it in a safer place right? I mean nobody steals stuff with the help of young children and a baby on their hip right?

IMO, while this article might have some merit to it, it still doesn't address the 800 lb gorilla in the room. The fact is, that people do not feel it is safe to go there, and they will take their gambling dollars elsewhere. Regardless of what you think of Las Vegas as a place to live (I have heard mixed reports from multiple people who live there), one thing you can't deny is where the tourist money is, on the strip, it is fairly safe and many people are walking around carrying rather large amounts of cash on them. Most cities, regardless of how they are outside of their downtown, or major area of commerce, keep up, maintain, and keep safe that major area so people are encouraged to come back and spend more of their time and money.
This hotel or that casino or the boardwalk could do this or that or add this new attraction but until people feel safe going there, it is not going to be all that it could and probably should be.

Honestly it is safe to come to AC. The statistics prove it in more ways then one. The perception is stronger then the facts. Having said that they could still throw a coat of paint on 75% of the town.

I don't know how much safety plays into people opinions to going there. I have never once heard someone (other than online, and mostly regulars) who have complained about safety. I am sure there are people that do and probably a lot, I am just saying I have never had someone that I know say they wouldn't go out of fear.
Expect the worst and you will never be disappointed. I AM NOT PART OF GWAE RADIO SHOW
