Someday a rain will come and wash all the scum off the street.
Come in, Travis? We need you now, more than ever.
The one time we went to Coachella as VIP the tickets were about $1000. each (but we got them free through connections I have) and it's on some dusty hot farm (it is a polo field) that stinks of horse manure. That year there was a heat wave and it was over 90 degrees every day, and very windy too which made the dust an even bigger problem. It was worth going to - once.
I think Burning Man was a good festival maybe twenty years ago. Nowadays it's just too crowded and I assume most of the people who know better who go anyway regret it each time. I think originally it was meant as a minimalistic event but for years now it's been more about high tech expensive set ups to overcome the desert elements - the equivalent of people who go to Avalon, Catalina Island and spend their time in a hotel room walking around in a bathrobe instead of exploring and hiking the island.
Burning Man this year 2023 is going to suck if Black Rock City still looks like a wet mess on Sunday
Burning Man Sucks! 10 Reasons to Stay Home 2013
The festival has been held annually since 1712 according to legend, although this year is the 99th official Zozobra festival, and culminates in a fifty-foot marionette being stuffed with people's bad "paper" and burned.
Unlike its ugly step-cousin in the Playa, the Zozobra festival is inclusive, has children's and family events, and raises money for charities throughout northern New Mexico.
They have "sin boxes" where people can put things like arrest warrants, parking tickets, bad report cards etc, etc. The marionette is hollow, but by festival time, it is filled with the boxes
Unlike the sausage fest in Nevada, people don't lay out $2,000 to attend, and most of the money is spent and stays in the Santa Fe- Albuquerque area. Crowds of 60,000 or more were expected for yesterday's kickoff parade.
Quote: gordonm888The final weekend of the Burning Man festival in Nevada's Black Rock Desert has been marred by heavy rains, transforming the area into a slippery mud bath.
Ah, there goes the neighborhood.
Oughta call it "Muddy Man" or perhaps for those who miss the dry weather "Yearning Man."
Party-goers were confined to their camps on Saturday as muddy conditions brought on by prolonged rain showers halted movement in and out of Nevada's Black Rock City.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), cooler-than-usual temperatures are reaching highs of mid-70s on Saturday and dropping to the mid-50s by night, with some people claiming they are suffering from hypothermia.
Rain began to cause issues on Friday afternoon when event organizers halted vehicle traffic and shut down exit gates.
Walking became hazardous, with thick mud clinging to shoes, and by morning, water puddles and street closures were evident, as a direct result of the significant rainfall
Don't you think officials should be clearing safe passage for anyone that wants to leave? Or is that too much to ask....ahem Moses?
Either way, hope everyone is safe out there.
Nothing but headaches. Arriving burners are not that bad but when they come back the entire city becomes so dirty from all that dust. It sticks arounds for weeks. You can’t keep anything clean. All the roads become so dusty. Bunch of people abandon their belongings and bicycles alongside of the road, littering you name it they do it. I cannot be happier with what they are all going through, I hope it floods and keep raining so they will never ever return.

But most of what he runs into is probably going to be more like this.

IT HAS BEEN REPORTED THAT FEMA HAS BEEN SENT IN TO SHUT DOWN BURNING MAN FESTIVAL! 🚨🚨🚨
There are rumors that people are getting SUPER SICK from some mysterious virus that is spreading “boils, vomiting, coughing up coagulated blood” 😳
FEMA has supposedly now locked down the entire area deeming it a “National Disaster”, trapping over 73,000 people inside Black Rock City.
NO way in. NO way out.
Keeping an eye on this situation. Will bring reports as I get more.
This evacuation from the Los Angeles International Airport or LAX was owing to a bomb threat earlier, and it has nothing to do with a private jet coming from the Burning Man infected with Ebola. https://twitter.com/CBKNEWS121/status/1698390487411908999
LA COUNTY HEALTH JUST TWEETED THIS REGARDING THE MARBURG HOSPITALIZATION. UNCLEAR IF ITS LINKED TO BURNING MAN.

Burning Man Virus Hand
The authorities could easily quarantine the place for 2 weeks with no supplies coming in and it becomes a death camp, but TV News estimates that people won't be able to leave because of the mud until Tuesday or Wednesday.

Our performance at Burning Man this afternoon has been postponed by FEMA for ebola. If anyone has four hazmat suits we can borrow that’d sure be swell.
But as far as being trapped in there and no one being allowed in or out, that is because of the muddy roads. And one person did apparently die, but of what, unknown.
There are a bunch of these overseas Click Bait sites that purport to have scooped outrageous stories but they are all fake news.
For example, this "Timepiece Gentleman" guy Anthony Farrer apparently scammed $5,000,000. of cash out of investors and watch consignees, but the stories about his arrest

were greatly exaggerated, and he's still around not arrested and not dead perhaps even pursuing new victims with cunning and vigor.
"As his attorney" I advised him not to go to Burning Man 2023. He didn't listen to me.
Over all I think the festival has been going downhill with this year being the nadir.

Now, I suppose, the challenge is getting the hell out of there. Although conditions are miserable, I suspect that the 2023 burn will be the one that attendees will most enjoy telling war stories about in the future.

Yes that's what Wizard said to me that '22 was a bad experience and that he did not plan to return to Burning Man.
Just heard from ol' Wiz. He is surviving, waiting for the rain to stop, the mud to harden, so buses may get people out.
“Burning Man is a community of people who are prepared to support one another,” Burning Man said on its website. “We have come here knowing this is a place where we bring everything we need to survive. It is because of this that we are all well-prepared for a weather event like this.”
Translation: We know it sucks but we're putting a positive spin on this. And you're not getting your money back.
"What happens at Burning Man..."
There is little you can do to stop the Eddie Haskells of the world besides pity them.
Btw Billy I hope you are well.
I did some simple un-proofed math since math is not my forte... I've posted the page after my comments in case people want to know actual costs if not discussed.
So if an est. 100,000 is close to the total of visitors, and main cost is 575.00 per person plus vehicle cost with 15,000 tickets available, that would mean someone is raking in maybe 8.6 Million in just main ticket sales, if only 5k car passes available thats another 750K in parking. This just one ticket package. We are not talking about some est of 70 million in donations? I'm assuming the other 45k are 'asked' to donate? Just who exactly does this money go to? I don't believe for a nanosecond that it all goes back to the event. How much does whatever acreage it is really cost to rent? And it would be logical to assume a huge number of vendors and artists who are not sponsored by coke or nvidia have to also pay fees and as I saw they do. As an event that started out based on my light research was a show against big corp and big energy and to be free of 'modern' rules and regs, it's a sad state of hypocritical affairs now. I also don't know the benefit of paying for a ticket. I guess range free to all events mostly?
Below is the page info with links and another link about donations, but the coop link seems a bit lax in fact checking. I see apparently another 10's of millions are processed in different packages.

One of the very few times I agree with you. People jumping conclusions to horrible documentation on vertical format that wouldn't show everything anyways.
Whomever posted the original in this case can post exactly what they want and only what they want to make a controlled and manipulated point.
I have not looked at the 'fuller' vid at this time so to make judgements about it is premature and likely way off.

I've been driving since 1965 and at one time or another I've been stuck in everything. Snow, sand, mud, and by far mud is the worst. I've seen a tow truck get stuck in mud trying to pull a car out and the tow truck that came to get him almost got stuck.

I have a feeling a lot of people are just gonna have to leave vehicles and RV's behind, trek the 5 miles to the nearest tiny town and bussed to civilization. Come back when it really dries out which can be a week to weeks. Thousands of vehicles on soft ground not completely dried trying to exit out is going to be a nightmare. These RVs will be heavy with full black tanks. It could be a line of cars for 2 days getting out considering last year's 8 hour wait in traffic.

Sometimes computers crash and need to be rebooted. He probably doesn't have the ability or ambition to reboot it remotely while he is out camping.

Airing down your tires to 8-12 pounds can substantially increase your traction in mud, sand, snow, gravel etc.
This is commonly done and common knowledge in the off roading world. So the next time you get the Volvo
stuck air em down buddy.
