Recently my stepdaughter was playing gin rummy with 3 of her friends . They have been playing together for several years. This was what she was dealt. She was on the dealers left in next or next to dealer position and occurred after approx 16 hrs of play. Her seven cards were 3,4,5 6,7,8,9. all in one suit! only one card was out of sequence, nevertheless it was a dealt 7 card st flush. ! They play with 2 decks of cards, with one deck being shuffled and gotten ready while they play with the other deck. Each person is dealt one card at a time until all receive 7 cards. What are the ODDS of this happening ? THANKS, Amnoi1.

Someone may have done an inadequate shuffle.

The odds of a 7 card straight flush in Pai Gow Poker are about 1:4,750,000 (I looked it up). That game has a 53rd card (1 joker), which makes the natural 7 card straight flush slightly less likely in PGP than it is in gin rummy. Even after adjusting for that, the odds of your daughter's hand must be less than 1:4,500,000.

Assuming a well-shuffled, standard 52 cards and that you allow aces to be either the high or low end of the straight flush, my calculation gives 1 in 4,180,767.5 -- My method is comb(52,7)/32 with the 32 representing eight possible seven-card straight flushes in each of four suits.

But my math is rusty.

The odds of your stepdaughter playing rummy for 16 hours with 3 of her friends is 1 in 10,000,000. I have never seen 4 friends play rummy for anywhere near that long. Quite an amazing story!
