I am booked for business to be in LV the last 2 weeks of the year. (our clients just love to finish off the budget by end of year...)
Typically with business travel, I fly out Sunday night and come back home on Friday evening. Due to the holidays, though, I am thinking of avoiding the need to fly and just staying 2 weeks straight. I believe my per diem is covered if I opt to stay over the weekend since it is more or less the same as airfare. I'm single and young so I don't have any need to be back home during the holidays.
The one hotel I looked at has reasonable rates up until 12/25 through 12/31. As expected, the nightly rate more than triples around new years.
My hope is to email a bunch of hotels and tell them my story and see if they'll cut me a deal. I am just a bit worried that they won't be flexible the last week of the year for obvious reasons.
Any suggestions on how to approach this?

What dates are you looking for? Do you only need the weekend of 12/23-25? Won't the company handle the rest of the time you're in town?

I am on a per-diem for lodging so I can pick where I stay, so I need to pick a place for 12/18-12/30. (around that range.. still trying to synchronize schedules between both companies with regards to office closings).

That is a tough period, going from very low demand to very high demand.
Gold Spike is advertising a $20 rate for all those nights. Not very glamorous, I know, but I've heard nice things about the rooms. Plaza is $24. Gold Coast is $32. Stratosphere is $37.
On the Strip, Bill's is $46. Luxor is $53. Monte Carlo is $65. TI is $74.
This is all from Expedia, which offers a useful day-by-day average.

The Plaza has been newly remodeled, it might be better than you think, especially at $24!

12/31 is always tough, but I wouldn't think so of the other days. Having a car?

At the Harrah's/Caesar's properties, the prices for the week between Christmas and New Year's are about double what they are for the previous week, and that doesn't take into account the massive jump for Friday/Saturday 12/30-31. Then again, it seems to me that it's not so much a case of "the second week is double the usual rate" as it is "the first week is half of the usual rate".
Mirage has decent prices if you leave on Friday 12/30 ($60/night, then $80/night on 12/23-24, then about $110/night).

I will have a car. I'm starting to think about not necessarily staying on the strip, although that is my preference because I love to walk around in the evenings. The prices Downtown are also attractive but I tend to not feel as safe downtown.
There is a nice Westin Element hotel in Summerlin that I've stayed at before that would be PERFECT for business stay (it is a extended stay property) but the prices for some reason are fairly high (rivaling strip properties). I'm not sure what businesses are in the area but the rates at this hotel always seem high.

I like using a website called TRAVELAXE.com. It searches
a bunch of other sites and comes back with a total price.
If you have a car, why not head up to Utah and see the
sights up there ? Lots of hiking opportunities in southern
Utah.
